Title: Wiper problems
Post by: Mk2George on 16 January 2009, 12:13
Ok my wipers have been bugging me for some time now and Ive done a thread search to no avail to try and find the remedy

Basically the wipers work but I have no single wipe without holding the stalk up. The only way I can get them to go down in the correct place is push the stalk up and *`time it`* so they stay in the normal parked position. As you can imagine this is getting rather annoying

I have tried changing the relay and its exactly the same.

So my question is if I buy this what do you reckon the chances are of solving the problem?

Does anyone have experience of this problem as obviously id rather not be wasting money on bits I dont need

Cheers, Tim

i had this on my Golf Driver rear wiper, and it was indeed the wiper motor to blame :)

Excellent, Thank you - I did wonder if it could be a fault of the stalk?

Just as a side note. I pinched the wiper mech off another Golf and the motor had 1 too few wires on it compared to my old one. Subsequently, when I hooked it up, it wouldn't self park - I had to wait then turn it back off.

So I swapped the motor for my old one and its fine again.

Has it always done it, or just started recently?

I have another problem. I'm getting a clunking when the wipers move from the park position and the judder across the screen whether there is water on the screen or not. but they're LHD wipers, I don't know if a RHD wiper will fit. Anyone?

I would strip the linkage out, then remove the circlip on top of the shaft and see the condition. Odds are they've gotten rusty and there is resistance to spin.

Just sand it back, plenty of grease and reassemble.

Its done it as long as Ive had the car (3 months or so) and I thought I could live with it, but being the perfectionist I am I have to keep giving it another cycle till the wipers lay flat lol, so Im getting near to having a serious accident here!!

And to make things worse I just missed the end of the auction and nobody bid on it

the linkage from early/late MK2s is different due to the wipers being on the opposite side, but the actual motor is the same.  Same with RHD/LHD too, same part number for the actual motor, just the linkages that differ :)

So on that note could I pull the motor off any Mk2 linkage and stick it on eg does the motor come off relatively easy as ive pulled the plastic rain guard off and the whole job looks a bit of a nightmare tbh, eg square peg round hole   :undecided:

yep should do!  The actual motor will come off the linkage on a RHD car without taking the whole lot out, I did exactly this when I nicked the motor out of a jetta for my mk1 cab :)
Not looked at early/LHD models though?  It certainly went on the MK1 without taking the linkage off, cant be that much different!

Ok managed to sort this today.  Been stripping out an 8v at the scrappies all day and took the motor from that. Did the swap which thankfully was easy but I still had the same problems. The only other thing it could be was the stalk so I tried that (managed to rob that from the donor 8v too) and Bingo it works!!

I still can get my head around whats in the stalk that can control the timing of the motor though as it just seemed to be a load of copper contacts?

Anyway, job sorted, hope this can be of use to someone in the future
