Title: What a price!
Post by: the_stink on 15 January 2009, 13:33
so as im lookign for a job interanlly which there are none at the moment! bored as hell so thought id ring a couple of bodyshops to get a price on removing the bumper stips on the doors

Rang the first place said it was a 3 dr mkiv golf and the kiddie at the other end didnt have a clue tbh 'well id have to see it really to give you a price? but any way he asked someone else and they said £100 a panel +vat

second bodyshop, at least this guy knew what he was talking about mentioned about the holes behind the doors etc need welding etc for both doors and quarter panels £700

never expected that! i knew it would be pricey so think ill leave that idea alone for a bit!

Sound like you'd have to have the holes fillled and the complete panels sprayed, thats why its so high.

I rang our local bodyshop for a total respray? £2000 he wanted! Is that expensive to you ?! I thought it was, but being a first car i actually want to spray im not too sure. My friend got his Ford Fez sprayed for £600 quid by my ex gf's brother lol, maybe ima ask him!  :undecided:

Thats reasonable. More often than not when it comes to things like full body resprays you get what you pay for.

Yeah man, he explained that on the phone. I dunno if this is a silly question, BUT i have a few scratches and things, would a respray go over them? I also have some like air bubbles on the bonet where it was sprayed before and not sealed properly? would they be gone also?

Some defects can be removed using a decent machine polisher. But the air bubbles would prob be a respray.

Post some pictures, scratches may come out with machine or wet and dry...

Well he scratches are in unspicious areas so im not fussed about them as unless your 2inches away from them you can't see em! It's just the bubbles i was concerned about, but i know a respray will get rid of them. It's just finding the money to do it

the bubbles are normally down to bad prep work.
as for sanding it down yourself, good money saving tip but some bodyshops wont touch it i would be a bit weary painting it, if there was any defects after paint it could be down to numerous things.
if prepped and painted in the bodyshop you can take it back if any defects came through.
you can get the 200 quid self prep jobs but IMO stay clear from them, for a decent job the materials would cost that!

righto guys with bodywork issuses. My cousin got his own bodyshop nxt to where i live (durham). He will remove bump strips weld guide holes in door and respray everything (so all bumpers doors smoothed) for £450. He will do a respray for £500 -£800 depending on your condition of your bodywork. As you know he done the bonnet extension on my car and smoothed all my rear badge it looks great. I am on my mobile so cnt post the link to my pics. But if you ask rich sure he cud russel something up lol hes good like that lol
