Follow the fuel line ...
Not sure about digi, but K-Jet is on drivers side, under the car, just in front of the rear wheel.
-
cheers ben, but is there anything i need to be carefull of like lol i dno when i take the old one off the petrol wont just leak out will it!!!
only asking cos when i was doing the oil i thought id be clever and turn the oil filter to see what would happen and it took me about 20 mins to turn the damn thing back round cos it was so slippery

Yeah, bear in mind, due to capillary action, there's a good chance, once the fuel starts flowing, it will continue to until the tank is empty!
Be gentle removing it because odds are the lines are seized, so dose them in WD40 and leave for a while, then come back to it. You don't want to bend the metal lines!
Again, on a K-Jet, if you open the boot, lift the carpet, you'll see a metal disc on the right hand side with 3 screws in it, this covers the lift pump for the tank. There's two hoses on it, send and return. Either disconnect both hoses, or unscrew the lift pump and lift it out the tank.
That way when you remove the filter, you won't loose too much fuel, and what comes out will evaporate off - just stay away from naked flames!
When reinstalling the filter, remember, it is directional, put it in the right way! Also remember, the system will need to prime again to get back up to pressure, so don't be scared if it doesn't start immediately.

My ten pence worth...
This might be really gay, but consider wearing goggles while your under the car - When I did mine a drop of fuel managed to came through the bung I'd put in the open fuel pipe, and fell in my eyes. Painful!!
Get some new copper washers for both sides of the fuel filter - it'll help prevent leaks.
Make sure you've got the right filter before you start the job. The 16v one is different to normal golfs IIRC.

loll that does sound pretty gay but safety first!!!!
well i havent had a look under the car yet to see what type of filter it is but ill give it a check in a few hours or so!!!! thanks for the help

be aware there are 2 types of 16v filter based on age of car, and also make sure you undo the right filter as on the fuel pump assembly there is also a fuel accumulator. The filter is the one with the fuel line at either end. the way I do it is to crack loose the 2 banjo bolts then the clamp bolt that holds the filter in.
remove 1 bolt and thread it loosely to the new filter, remove the other boltr then quicky fit the filter in place. this should help reduce the ammount of fule lost, catch it all in a jug and then store in a bottle for later, it works great for cleaning oily bits :)

+1. I did the exact same thing myself!

I guess there is always a price to pay for performance
Carbs FTW! Fuel filter in the engine bay  5 minute job in the freezing cold and dark.

I suppose when you drive something that gives about 10mpg, theres so much fuel flowing into the carb the filter is probably flushed clean daily anyway!

'cept when the tank gets too empty and all the crap gets sucked up and pushed into the filter...
