hello all from a newbe
i will be getting a golf gti hopefully this week or next week, the thing is i aint sure what size wheels to get or how low to go?
my first thought was 18's but some 19's have come up at a good price, whats your views on 18's and 19's apart from the price of rubber.lol
another one is how low can i go on each wheel size. i dont want it scraping the floor or arches but i dont want it in the clouds either just sitting nice over the wheel. i would prefer to use springs only(the cheaper option) ive seen 35mm and 40mm would this be enough?
thanx in advance for any advice

19's are too big IMO. You're much better off going for 18's, and with a 40mm drop it'll look
-
18's, cheaper rubber and less road noise and better mpg
If you want go low 50mm should be fine, just go slow on speed bumps. you'll also want to upgraded the anti roll bar if you go this low

Indeed.
-
coilovers m8 40mm drop on 18's cnt go wrong imo spring wil be ok but ull be disapointed with the ryd
-
now thats what i call quick replys, cheers lads.
my plan to start with was 18s with the 35-40mm drop but as these 19's come at a good price might be worth getting em just to sell on
my last car was on 18's and really low, it looks really smart but jeez the ride is pretty poor and speedbumps you had to vitually stop and roll over em, the rubber was 215 35 though might of had a bit to do with it.
thats sorted then 18's with a 40mm drop  you say roll bar? would this be ok with this setup or would i need to replace?
thanx again
-
roll bar will be fine with the 40mm drop, its only when you get quite low such as 50-60 mm u need to replace it really
mines lowered 40mm on 18s rides perfectly and no problems, looks great aswell, as said earlier 19's are well too big and
sh!t to drive on

any pics?
does anything vary on the 3 door -5 door i.e springs the same?
sorry for these stupid sounding questions, i would normally buy the car then ask questions some times a mistake though.

this is my car mate, lowered on 40mm as i said with the 18's , is that the look u want my man?
-
only thing that varries is the front axel load differs between models what whith the lump being heavier
ull be asked is it up to or above 960kg's 1.4 - 2.0 l's are up to 960kgs petrol only desiels im not so sure about but ovbs the v5 an v6 are heavier than the 4 pots.....
the weight makes the front end sit down more so springs are suited to heavier cars
so if you wanted theres nuffin stopping you puttin 1.4 shocks etc on a gt tdi 150 ps

that is spot on  those are the wheels i was looking at getting.
i like the "on the deck" look but would like some comfort aswell, lol
-
Your best bet is 18's lowered 40mm
Thats the most common set-up that people go for
It's what I have on mine - and is the best compromise for comfort and looks!

AIR RIDE!!!
-
there are a few golfs floatin around with air bag suspension, lookkss ace, but sh!t ride and costs thousands!

You'd be surprised at the ride. It's the only way if you want to go proper low.
-
wow that surprises me i thought the handling would be pants
nm still cant afford it though lol
-
Air rides come along way in the last few years, as far as handling their not far off coilovers but have a better ride plus as soon as you park up you dump it on the floor
a kit fitted from rayvern hydraulics is around £2200
-
But a good set of coilies are £1000 near enough then add in all the broken sumps etc...!;)
