ok so i got a new ecu temp sensor today swopped the old one as car before kept cutting out on idle and was running rich! fitted new one went for a spin coolant temp heated up to roughly 90c then dropped to zero all of a sudden then went back up to 70 c then back down then up then down ect ect....
could i be low obn coolant as when i took it off i lost alot of water?

could be, top up the water and check the conection on the plug. A bit of wd can work wonders!
-
yea its weird! car hasn cut out while its fitted but its still up and down after top up and wd40! im gonna jus get it swopped its obviously faulty cos old one read temp fine!

Loosing alot of coolant wouldn't make it go up and down it would stay hot as theres a low amount of coolant unless you had an airlock but only seen a 5 Turbo do this with an airlock !
As said check the connection on the plug.. If its fine then the sensor could be a faulty one !

I would say it is an air lock. Air got in and filled the area that the coolant spilled from. U need to top up your coolant and slacken off the sensor and let the air out. Go for a drive to get engine hot and bleed/top up some more.(be careful of hot coolant!)

faulty ecu i swapped it with another car works fine now

Faulty ECU don't you need to code your key to a different ECU ? Or ECU temp sensor?
