Right, I have searched.. and not found anything useful...
Basically, my glovebox handle broke and sticking a screwdriver in the hole I can hear something being pushed down but it doesnt release the catches...
Any advice on opening it? My radio's in there so pretty desparate

I had the same problem (except leaving me radio in it!!!) on my 1st GTi.
I drilled the backing of the handle and broke it off after I had made several large holes in the handle,
which now seems stupid thanks to the video that spunkymonkey has linked to........Nice 1 by the way
If only I had seen that then, would have saved alot of dicking about with drills and screw drivers!! Doh!
Now on my 2nd GTi, and if it happens again (which it prob will) then ill go the video route!

Would it be possible to get rid of the glove box and stick an air bag cover thing on there instead?

Would also like to know if this is possible. My Highline has a passenger airbag and a lower glovebox and I much prefer it so would like to stick the same setup in my SE as it looks more up to date.

I dont see why not, just get an airbag from the scrappers. i do know the lower glove boxes are fetching reasonable money, seen them go for 50 sheets on the bay!
-
how does the airbag cover attach? on some sort of release mechanism i assume so would i need that too?
-
The complete airbag will bolt on i would have thought somewhere. It may just be a bracket that will use the glovebox mounts!

Its all good, I phoned Mikester and he said exactly where to wiggle a screwdriver and I got it open
For now I just unscrewed the back and took the front plate out, then put the back bit in.
New one ordered from ebay for £7ish

The lock broke on my Vento's glovebox but it is stuck open instead of closed . At the moment some blue-tac is keeping it shut. Have a new glovebox on the way though.
