Title: Petrol Gauge Fail
Post by: bondbill2k2 on 14 January 2009, 00:31
Well went for a drive in the golf today, soon as i turned the ignition on i noticed the petrol gauge was totaly empty, didnt move.
Odd...sure was just above the red last night

So i went to the petrol station put £10 just for some short journeys...still nothing.

Any idea why this may be? Possible loose connections or a fuse?

Mine lies to me, I put £20 the other day, took it to just under half way, drive a little bit, it goes down to a quarter..bit of a drop. Next day get in the car and it's back up, I probably got a full tank based on mine f**king up lol!

check the fuse first if not that check the fuel sender leads on the pump under back seat if wiring looks ok remove fuel pump n sender n see the float is still attached.

what fuse is it? Looking in the original car manuala nd says isn't a fuse for sender from what i can see.Checked the sender and couldnt see wires on it looked sealed.
When ignition is turned the needle raises a few mm's so its basicaly not below the minimum but wont go any higher

Im used to not having a petrol gauge (failed in my mk2 and my mini)
Ive checked the sender and it appears 100% ok and a good clean connection.
You say check the fuse but looking in the car manual the only fuse related to that area is the fuel pump. No fuse for the gauge/sender

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

this seems to be common drove 3 days with it on the red until it ran out of fuel round the corner from my house, so i just trip it when i fill up.

Remove the wire from the sender and ground out if the gauge goes up then its the sender if not the gauge is knackered.

Mine was the same it is due to the weight on the end of the sender and how much fuel it has soaked up, I asked the dealer when mine was being serviced.

He told me it is a very common fault / problem.

mm where can i get a sender from then?
Looked on gsf and couldnt find one, only found-
" FUEL PUMP SEND.TOP COVER           G3           54.0"
54.00 for a cover?

I would think your best bet is to try the main dealer.
