i have a 1.8t and unfortunately my gearbox is playing up big time
When i drive the car i have to hold the gearstick in place otherwise it pops out and grinds back to neutral
It holds in place in 2nd gear and 4th, yet on the top gears 1st,3rd and 5th it doesnt stay in gear
Ive had a brand new ecs stage1 clutch put in so i know its not the clutch. I had a quote to get my gearbox reconditioned and he quoted me 550 quid, not including putting it in or taking it off?
Any advice?

check the linkage on top of the gearbox, cant see how it now fubered when you have just had the clutch changed. sounds to me like the linkage is not fitted or ajusted properly
-
get a 2nd hand unit for around 250, 1st 3rd and 5th are on the same shaft so follows thats why they pop out, i take it they only pop out when you bring thr clutch back up
-
yeah they pop out when the clutch is back uo
I had a garage look at the linkage and they said it looks ok
Would it not be dodgy buying a second hand gearbox?

Depends how long you want to keep the car. Get one off a low mile car from a salvage place and you'll be looking at around £350-400 fully fitted. It'll usually have a 1 month unlimited milage warranty.
Otherwise, recondition, or buy a reconditioned box. The box on my golf was done just before I got it. It had a full refit and cost £1100 cash.

2nd hand box will be fine as long as you buy from a good breakers yard or transmission specialist,

thanx guys

Be carefull about that ebay box,it's off a 1.8 20V non turbo car, will it be the same as a turbo car is anyones guess.I blew my gearbox on my old car and that cost me £1150 fitted,it was a sad day....

Ill get it sorted next month most probably

Go to www.breakeryard.com fill in the details and you will get an email with price for the part and delivery. All you do then is phone the number, confirm that its for the right car and pay the money.
I just got an engine wiring loom for my 1.8t AUM and its cost me £40 + £10 delivery and should be here tomorrow.
