Title: Lumpy delayed Acceleration on my 20V 1.8 GTI
Post by: mak911s on 19 June 2004, 13:44
Hi Guys

Never had any problems really with the car, but this time looks like i may need a trip to a main dealer. ?????????? ching ching ????????

As of tuesday this week, the car has no get up and go.  Acceleration delayed and when engine does pick-up, its lumpy.

Had all the plugs out and all look nice and brown.  car ticks over fine.  MPG fine according to trip computer, i reckon its better than usual though  ???

Had all the plug leads off and on and WD40 every connector i could see in the engine bay.  Still the same.

Any ideas ???

Symptoms you describe could be caused by a faulty MAF sensor (dealership will call it an air mass meter) but obviously can't say 100% that's it. See if you can find a local garage that has vag-com software to check your fault codes, it'll be way cheaper than vw's inspection charge.
If it is the MAF then ask your local dealership about an exchange unit.. they seem to have cottoned on to the fact these things knacker quite commonly and offer you a reconditioned or new unit for about ?75 in exchange for yours. Not bad considering they're ?250 new. It's a doddle to fit it yourself too.. take the old one off in the carpark.. swap it.. new one back on in 10 minutes.

Chris.
