You may know i'm looking for either an Audi, or a Passat. I am having no luck with the Passat as of yet (except for a Santana which the owner would be tempted to give away), so i look towards the Audi. I have found a few. Tell me what you think... I don't have any experience with these yet, do they seem a bit pricey, or is that cos they're rare?

All 3 of those links seem to bring up the same car :-\
The UR Quattro, very sought after, 4wd, turbo charged 2.2 five cylinder. Lovely car but as you say, bit pricey for its age. I always wanted one but when I finally came up with enough money to buy one I decided to get the newer shape galvanized one that you see below in my signature.
-
very nice mallows, :D
a real classic!
but your a student, how you gonna afford that? ???
-
So it does!! That is the nicest one though! The other two were a silver one, and a white one. 2.3 turbo, just over 4000. Does that seem like a reasonable price though, or will i get one cheaper?
Ok, VERY excited. Update on the Passat situation... Mum and dad say theres a 2 litre GL5 D reg in town for sale, which is like no 1 on my list, Audi being 2nd. I might have found the car i've been looking for!!! Don't know the price though, and will have to see about insurance, like mucas_cl says i'm only a student...
Rich, i do like the updated one, but feel its not half as good as its predecessor! Cheaper though!

I'll think about that once i've bought it!!! There are students on here that GTi's, so i hope i can afford one of these!?

Yup there are indeed students on here with GTI's!! And i got my 16V when i was 20! I cant afford it but hell ive got it anyway!! Get very depressed when I see my credit card bill but then just go out for a blast in the Golf!!
Mike

Know what you mean!
Just did a quote for the GL5, turns out its ?820, about ?70 a month! Which is about ?20 a month more than whn i first got the car! Its cheaper than a GTi!! Sooooo excited now :D
Gonna go and take it for a test drive on Monday, then see wha happens... Still a niggle that says no!! Really don't feel up to selling the Golf :'( :'( ::) :-[
Right, to the "older" residents of the forum. I want to know as much about these cars as possible, as there is very little information about these cars out there... Dad says it used to overheat when towing, and it wasn't as nice to drive as a Golf, but they were damn fast, and very underrated! All i remember about it was not being able to see over the bonnet!! And how cool it was! HELP tell me more, like common probs etc....
Thanking you
-
I don't think you will get insured on an Audi quattro turbo, that will be more than getting insured on a vr6!
As far as i know the GL5 has the 5 cylinder 2.2 10v Audi engine, about 140bhp i think.

^^^^^ I owned and ran one of those for 11 years, great car. Just as quick as my previously owned mk1 Golf GTI. You do however lose a bit of the 'fun' factor due to the size of the car, if you know what I mean :-\
-
the audi quattro is a nice pipe dream mallows,
but back to reality, it would cost you an arm and a leg to get it insured,
cant fault you for wanting to try tho mate ;)
mucas cl, lmao every time i see it :D :D
having a look at the pics brings back memories for me goin to the rallyes at wollaton park and seeing some of the quattros in the flesh, there beasts mate :D :D :D :D
-
Fully agree really. It was an either or situation, but both are very hopeful really. Went and had a look at the GL5 today, very good condition on the outside, only a little rust on some of the arches... Interior ain't so good, but still not bad! Seats are in better condition than mine.... I don't want to get one though and have trouble bringing it up to standard cos of lack of parts etc... It does need a bit of love too. Am going to test drive it soon ;D :D Cant wait! Unsure about a 5 cylinder though, mightn't be too smooth? Had any experiences with that? Rich, did you mean a quattro or a GL5 that you owned? I think its a 2.0 litre, with the audi engine, but really don't have a clue! It was a bit before my time! It was a nice car to sit in, more luxuries than mine, and a nice big feeling! Have uploaded some pics into my gallery, when there approved i'll post em in here, be warned though, theres a fiat in the way!
-
hey i had a five cylinder fiat,
it wasnt bad mallows! :D
-
I used to have the 2.0 and 2.2, 5 cylinder coupe GT. Probably the same thing as the GL5 that you mention. The one that I ran for 11 years was the 2.0litre JS engined one. Bought a smashed 2.2 for spares but never really needed any...........performance wise there was nothing between them...........both were quick ;)
You gotta go for 5 cylinders if you can...........so smooth and sound great 8)
-
I've heard that 5 cylinders aren't as smooth as four or 6, and i would presume as its not as balanced? But hey, i haven't driven it yet!
-
Yup there are indeed students on here with GTI's!!
Mike
;D 8)
-
Probably not as good, mine would be a GL, but yours was a GT? How much should i pay for a D reg GL5, in average condition then? 150,000 miles. PAS, central locking, electric windows, sunroof etc...
-
Yup there are indeed students on here with GTI's!!
Mike
;D 8)
Showoff!! :P
Althugh, while your here, as your pretty much the same age as me... How much does it cost for your insurance? And is it in your name?
-
im 19 next week.
Its all on my name fully comp with elephant.co.uk
ill PM u the amount i pay lol
edited: The reason ive ended up with a Gti is because i fell in love with the thing, then bought it without even thinking of the insurance costs cos i just had to have it.
By the way i like the silver audi better ;)
-
Yeah its the 1st policy in my name, was 20 when I got it, insurance is ?1100 a year 3rd party with elephant

are u buying it then?
-
Would'nt really appeal to me I'm afraid. Why don't you have a look at Jetta GTi's? They should be a little cheaper as they have the boot. That Passat is sim to my 4 cylinder tank of a Audi 100 that I use for taking my Labrador to the park. (in size)

-
what about the audi 80 coupe? ;)
-
Now theres a good choice! Quattro of course! :P
-
us young guns cant afford a quattro's insurance :o

Looks Beefy^
-
Us old boys can! ;D
-
us young guns cant afford a quattro's insurance
I couldn't even afford to buy the car, being a student leaves you soooooo skint!!! >:(
-
Dont know if i'm buying yet... Its showing its age a bit, and doesn't look as loved as mine!! I have fallen in love with it though. At the moment the pro's and cons are pretty much even :-\
None of them appeal to me really, it was a situation of one or the other... Jetta just isn't the same! The passat would be better too...Insurance is only a little bit more than a 1.3, for the GL5, but a GTI, well... As an example, blue MK2 is paying double what i would pay for his GTI, we're the same age (by a day) and i have 0% no claims, he has 2 years...
How much do you think its worth, judging by the pics and what i've said etc...? I don't have a clue ??? ::)
-
I doubt its worth a lot.
More reason to buy it!!
Think of the tuning potential...
5 cylinder :D
BUY IT :D
-
A few things that would put me off -
1 - Its age
2 - High miles (yes I know they are good engines but whats the cost if it had to be replaced as it is heading towards the end of its life)
3 - Image
4 - Parts? Not to sure about these cars but I would imagine they would be a little rarer than most.
I would have one only if it was very cheap. As I said my old Audi is nearly dead, but it cost me ?25 and I serviced it for under ?50. If she sees the end of the summer thats a suprise.
As for what the GL5 is worth, to me ?300. But as I say, thats my opinion and if you like it go for it.
Ps, Are these the same as the Audi 100 Avant? The back looks sim?
-
Age isn't necessarily a problem.
The bodywork is more important.
High miles would probably put me off.
However parts should be easily available, as there are plenty of Audi 5 cylinder cars still around.
If anything parts are easier to get and cheaper for the 10v, getting parts for a 5 cylinder 20v is more expensive and more difficult.
-
Your attitude is the attitude of most people, hence it being as underrated as it is!! The car has never been popular, always been better than most of the similar rivals of the time though! I wouldn't have even thought it worth ?300! More like ?75.... Parts, GSF still sell servicing parts, and they were popular (and are) in America, may be able to get rarer parts there? Age, and miles is something that worries me too.. Image, thats why i want it!! People would look, and think it not up to much, but it does shift! I will have to test drive it first! Just keep having dreams about i for the next week ::) ;D
-
Thats what i'm trying to tell ya
Most people don't like it, so it will go for peanuts.
If its in good condition then
ITS A f**kING BARGAIN ;) :D
-
Well for ?75 you can't go wrong. Insurance though? Is it worth paying a premium for something thats worth pennies? I can see why you want it though.
-
I already knew that!!! Thats one of the reasons i'm so interested! Its Damn hard to decide though. I've spent so long getting my car to be near perfect, and i really like it. And going to uni soon, mightn't be able to afford it :-\ :'(
Although, it is a GL5 ;D 8) I would be so proud! Its things like wax on the carpet, and "tired" trim too. Besides, i have to test drive it, and he owner isn't available yet, so waiting it will be!!
-

Can't see why you want it? ???
Its a 5 cylinder, thats why.
It will be faster than an 8v gti, probably not a lot different to a 16v ;)
-
Stick your plate on it and it will look the nads! Feck it, go for it.
-
Seriously,
I used to have a passat estate GT 16v, it was the newer model after the one mr.mallows is looking at.
It was the ultimate Q car, it looked like a bland old estate, but it went like sh!t off a shovel.
Everyone used to turn round and look cos it had a k&n and a drilled box, it sounded mad!
I remember i was at GTI inters a few years back, at Swindon. When we left this geezer tried to race me off the lights onto the motorway in a mk1 golf gti, i left him for dead :D
-
Well, i've got a week to think about it.... That silly sticker would have to go stright away!!! And the wheel trims! So gay! The seats are in fairly good condition though, better than mine by far!
My plates are E plates, not JM 1 Thats been edited! I thought, why just blank it out, why not make it look good, i've had a few people ask if they can buy them!
