you'll grow to love it, and the mk3 platform as a whole. I'm sure.

No, I'll go to strip it and the Golf3 platform as a whole.

It's already cut my bloody finger, taking the straps off when I got the damned thing back here.

You were going to come down and trailer it back to Scotland?

These engines deserve neither the Golf3 shell, nor hobbling with K-Jet.

I will ensure this engine can go on to enjoy a full and healthy life, released from it's prison.

Like that if I had too. Darn it!

Just one thing, how did you know it was an ABF, are all the MK3 16v's ABF's ?

All Golf3 16V are ABF, as are the later Toledo 16V, Ibizas and Cordobas.

i hear the golf 3's have the hydrolic clutch and the seats have a slightly different setup on the gearbox. Thats the only difference not sure which is better

Good to know. So what power you expecting out the old girl

These engines deserve neither the Golf3 shell, nor hobbling with K-Jet.

Don't shout at me, I saw the discussion on another thread between you and someone else about the good ole K-Jet ABF dispute. However, I thought the ABF on a KR head produced more BHP - without any other modification, than the standard ABF does on Motronic?
Title: Re: Cheap abf car!!
Post by: Diamond Hell on 13 January 2009, 21:58
Toledos have cable clutch instead of the hydraulic - stay with the G2 pedal box, as the above poster has done.

I want a garage, trailer and spare cash too

Get old then

Well, if I see +160bhp I'll be pretty happy.  Danny's was doing 173bhp when it was on the dyno and that just had a home-build exhaust manifold.

How in all f*ckery would a 30 year old mechanical system out-perform Motronic?

Not outperform, I was just under the impression (from what I'd read) that the standard ABF was about 150 BHP, but the ABF block with KR head was more in the region of 160 BHP - that true?

I understand with correct mapping etc. it can far excel in terms of torque and fuel economy.

Danny's is a standard ABF.

I'm tempted to stick my stock Toledo on the rollers up at Interpro to see what it's putting out at the moment.  Odds on it'll be delivering more than the 150bhp - this is a high-flowing motor - it WANTS to perform.

It doesn't need frantic remapping, as the management is designed to adapt and keep the engine running as well as possible under all conditions.  If you stick a free-flowing exhaust manifold on it then it'll up the fueling to accommodate the extra air through the motor.  You don't get that with K-jet, you just get the motor leaning out (see thread here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=76543.60)) and struggling to provide reliable power.

The thread you're all thinking of already exists here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=102539.0).

Ok doke ;)

Out of interest, does the rear beam off a MK3 fit the MK2, I know you can whack the front end on to wide track it, but what do most folk do about the rear?
Title: Re: Cheap abf car!!
Post by: Jay on 13 January 2009, 23:29
Passat rear beam? or was that the syncro setup you needed a Passat rear beam for... ?
Title: Re: Cheap abf car!!
Post by: Diamond Hell on 13 January 2009, 23:54
Given that the Golf3 is just a Golf2 with lots of extra lard I should imagine you will be able to just bolt up the G3 beam.  It's not something I've ever done, but the Toledo (G2 chassis) that I have has a lot of G3 stuff on it, to take it to wide-track, which I think includes the rear G3 beam.  This would point to the beam being compatible with either.

The Passat has a different rear end set up - ostensibly the same as the Corrado.  Shame they didn't use it on the G3 - it might have actually moved the game on, instead of treading water.

Could someone explain the difference between ABF and 9A or whatever it is? I don't know what you're all on about.
Title: Re: Cheap abf car!!
Post by: Horney on 14 January 2009, 00:07
ABF is fitted to MKIII Golfs and Toledos etc as DH has already pointed out and produces 150bhp according to VW. It runs on Digifant fuel injection int he MKIII Golf.

9A is fitted to late Corrado 16v's and late B3 Passat GT 16v's and produces 136bhp according to VW. It runs on KE-Jet mechanical fuel injection.

I don't know what differences there are between bottom ends but I believe the ABF is longer stroke than the  9A. Certianly the heads are almost exactly the same. The 9A however has a rubbish inlet cam and a 42mm inlet manifold whereas the ABF has a 50mm inlet manifold. Putting ABF (or KR) cams in a 9A and fitting the 50mm inlet manifold pretty much makes them equal on power and torque.

bore and stroke are the same.   the ABF is a tall block  the big differance been that the con rods are 159mm long as oposed to 144 mm long.
the 159mm rods give it a better stroke/rod ratio.    longer the rods reduce forces and thrust angels ect.

also toothed wheel in cranck and all that ect

Ben the only issue I had with the rear beam is the brake compensator is different on the toledo not sure about the golf3. As i'd had all the brake lines made up i decided to leave the mk2 one on. Hopefully I will put the wide track one on at a later date
