Title: NEVER...
Post by: Jay on 12 January 2009, 20:31
... let your fuel tank get less than 1/2 on the red (less than 1/16th? of a full tank)

Ss-sst-tu-ut-tte-err-r-rrr-rr mania

If you ever let your fuel get that low and start experiencing crazy stutter, change ya fecking fuel filter first

Mine was probably due anyway and luckily I had a spare

I was thinking the worst things were happening all the way home even after I filled up, the car was going nuts when I tried putting my foot down in 3rd, 4th or 5th and in 1st and 2nd it felt like it wasn't even firing on all cylinders
This is NOT an experience I want to relive... I suggest having a spare fuel filter in the car or at home!

Are there any easy ways to clean out the fuel tank to get rid of the 20yrs of crap?

I don't let mine get below 1/4, that's mainly because the gauge only really operates between 1/4 and 3/4's. So I have no idea if its actually a 1/4 tank or if its empty

I had to chance it because I was running late for work

You forgot 2007 and 2008

Honestly, I thought it was completely fookered because it had been hard rain most of the day and it felt like it wasn't running on all cylinders.

I guess I was so relieved it was only the fuel filter I had to post to let it out my system

I've run my daily under the red a few times..no problem....

Except the MFA says I only ever do 10mpg  Should really fix the vacuum pipe.

My MFA always thinks I'm getting 1/3 of what I really am.

But I'm confused, I can understand if it over reads the MPG, due to a leak. But how to can under read the value - surely it would need even more vacuum?

I thought it was the speed sensor and vacuum sensor on the back of the clocks which was nuked, rather than the hose itself.

If it's a carb engine, you could do the old trick of covering up the air intake for 10 seconds while holding the revs up, then letting go. Sucks the crap through   Had to do it once when mine wouldn't start when ran near empty.
