Having had to part ways with the MkIV 1.8T was looking in to buying a used MK5, budget of around £9k, obviously wont be able to afford a GTi but was looking at the 2.0 FSI 150bhp? Would love a 170bhp GT tbh but bit out of my price range! Any tips and recommendations? Cheers!

I think you could just about get a GTI if you haggle hard enough..... there are plenty of £10k GTI's out there (Pistonheads and Autotrader) so you just need to find an eager seller who is willing to haggle.

Really? £10k for a GTi? Probs be high mileage though, wanna stay under 60k if possible. Incredibly tempted to get a MK4 R32 for the money tbh!

If you do decide to get the 1.4 GT or 2.0 GT TDI, note that the engines can be remapped up to 200bhp by Revo. The 140 and 170 bhp versions are also just two different levels of ECU map of the same engine. There is no mechanical difference between the 140 and 170.

Definately possible given the insultingly low prices I have seen at trade prices these days, 07 plates 10.5k, 55(06) at 9.5k of course these are trade prices try getting the same from the pond life in the stealership and you'll be looking at 3-4k more. Have you a local auction house?
Btw 30,000 miles and less re the above, good luck.

How come they can map the 170 higher than the 140 if there is no mechanical difference? :undecided:
Defo go for the GTI its a fantastic car, just a shame I may have to get rid of mine soon, still so undecided on what to do. :(

Thanks for the responses!
Just been having a good look around Pistonheads and there are some real bargains there, performance wise is there a big difference between the mk4 r32 and the mk5 GTi?
-
Probably not much in it if the Gti is remapped

According to the Revo website they can do both up to about 210. I haven't heard of there being any mechanical differences anyway. I could well be wrong though.

My advice, if you're buying from a stealer wait until the end of the month, they need to hit targets so will drop their pants for deals,

I'm sure I remember reading a review of the Mk5 GTI in VW Driver magazine backed in 2005 when it was first launched. They said it totally 'troucned the Mk4 1.8T' and was quicker than the Mk4 R32!
