Title: Gearbox Oil Change
Post by: VWaxilMK1cab on 25 June 2003, 15:52
How much oil does the gearbox on a MK1 1.8 gti cab hold?

Where is the drain plug?

Cheers

Drain plug is right at the bottom of the diff and you will either require a big Allan key or the special tool.

Official capacities are 1.5 litres for 4 speed and 2 litres for 5 speed.

I did my 5 speed recently and didn't quite get 2 litres in so you should get away with just the 2.

"richandhazel" - could I ask what type oil you used and was there a noticeable difference after?

Hi, I bought the 'Morris' 80/50 gear and differential oil from GSF.
I can't tell you whether it made any difference in this car as it was a non runner when I bought it. However I used to have a problem in my Audi coupe GT: After a long run down the motorway, when I came off and changed down it would 'stick' in gear and be difficult to change gear...........an oil change cured the problem.

You should use a straight 80w GL4 spec oil, I know this as I work for an Oil Company!!!
