Hello ive a 91 8v gti digifant which is a fantastic little car however i feel i could do with a little more power. I dont want to spoil the essence of the car by dropping in a vr6/1.8t iam a bit old skool so was thinking of a AAG block with my pb head poss twin 45's,just looking for advice from anyone who has done this conversion ie was it worth it ,what i need in parts to do it ,and the expected power output. This is my first golf gti and is not my daily driver so can take my time with this, any help/advice would greatly appreciated thanks

My advice, put bigger stoppers on it

You can chip the ECU on these cars which will give you a little more power, and then the usual add ons, like replacing exhaust manifold for a tubular header, after market exhaust, different duration cam, different air filter, etc, etc. But TBH, you have to spend a fair wedge to get anything over 120bhp, which is not bad at all, but probably a little down on what you are after.
-
Aye, If you've got all the stuff for a AGG conversion go for it, otherwise go for the FOTM ABF instead  You'll more power which is what you want with a decent weight engine init, init?
-
45 doce's are outdated and are crap on an 8 valve anyway. keep it injection or go crossflow and use bike carbs or ITB's
-
Thanks to everybody for their replys with regards to the AGG block/pb head conversion is it a straight swop or are there other parts which i will have to buy. Will a mk3 gearbox fit without to much hassle in the mk2 subframe sorry if these questions are bit basic but this is the first golf i've owned thanks in advanced

I know some people swap out the bottom end from their 1.8 8v and use a 2.0 8v bottom end, is that what you're wanting? From what I've read it gives you a small power gain but loads more torque.
-
Yes jay that's what i had planned
-
you put pb head on agg block with agg gasket and use a 2e dizzy and it bolts in to what you have already have
-
am i right in thinking that you can also use a 2E motor ??
-
yes 2e can be used also there is one more code from the mk3 that can be used but not sure of it
-
2e was the old favoret but there starting to run out so everyone is munching at the AGG supply now
-
Is this the same if I've got an 8v K Jet? i can get an engine cheap, but need to work out what else i need.
Cheers
-
Just the bottom block isn't it?
-
Use ADY/Sharan Engine, b different.
Compression ratio is special.
I had a 2e block on of my old Mk2s, was cool but a little thirsty
Sorry to jack your thread
-
Why is it ness to use a 2e dizzy? dose the pb one not fit?
-
Is there any advantage to using a 2e/AGG bottom end compared to a bored out 1.8?
:)
Alllllllso is there a rough figure of the torque increase by adding a 2.0 bottom end?
-
i got 145lbft
-
PB dizzy is too thin (smaller diameter) so wont fit in the hole properly. You can make up a spacer ring to make it sit in the hole nice (used to be able to buy them from somewhere) but easier to just fit 2e dizzy.
I have recently done a 2e bottom end conversion with schrick 276 cam and slightly modded head, defo has more grunt but tbh for the money it's cost me to build i was expecting more and wouldnt bother doing it again. But i needed an engine and quick for a trip to the ring.
Money is now being saved for 20vt conversion only a few months after doing the 2e stuff :undecided:
-
agg dizzy also only gives 1 pulse per revolution, so would only fire one cylinder
-
so to do a AGG conversion you need a 2E dissy
but if you use the 2E then the dissy will be ok ??
better off with a 2E motor then ???
-
i think it was tsr that did the spacer ring to retain original dizzy
