Title: Retro fit foldong mirrors
Post by: Obbzi on 09 January 2009, 14:06
I have a 2008 R32 and would like to have folding mirrors (for when I put her in the garage, its a bit tight!)

Can this be retro fitted? If so where and how much?

Assuming your wiring harness has the necessary connectors (it may not), you will also need at minimum, a new the mirror switch in the drivers door and access to vag-com for re-coding.

Haven't got a clue on how much it'll cost.

I think it will cost far too much to justify the extra 2cm clearance you get at both sides when the mirrors are folded. I have the foldy mirrors on my R32 and simply the MK5 Golf foldy mirrors are a joke. They dont even fold in full for a start let alone give you much more room either side. Unless you can do it for under 100 quid I would forget out it. My opinion of course.

they are alright for checking out if your hair is in place  only when parked tho dont do this when driving people lol. no but seriously they dont fold in very much at all, in fact they dont look like they are folded in sometimes but when i was looking for a new car it gad to have them for the reverse activated auto tilt to kirb mirror, makes parking more accurate and easy but also helps stop kerbing the alloys

So true, when I showed my brother the folding wing mirrors on the Gti he just laughed and demonstrated his mirrors on his 8 year old lexus is200. much better movement and more space saving. not worth getting it on the gti/r32 due to the limited movement and space saving.

^^^^^ no they are not standard you get them with the lux packs.  i think you also get footwell lights with lux pack aswell

I have footwell lights but pretty sure I don't have the lux pack (certainly don't have the folding mirrors anyway)

^^^^ yes i think got mixed up with you got footwell lights inc with lux pack if you had a lower spec golf example golf 1.6 s
or similar. But i know courtesy lights under the wing mirrors were defenitely part of lux pack

If you want my tuppenceworth, they are pretty crap I wouldn't bother.... As for the puddle light, they give off a low level yellow light, hardly illuminates the ground much. Personally don't think you are missing that much.

But surely the bulbs could be changed to a brighter set?

Does the reverse-parking-mirror work with this kit or is that something else?

I guess you could change the bulbs....reverse dipping mirror came in later than my (05) 55, my06.

Mine works perfectly every time. It only works when the mirror control is set to the L position. I am wondering in the times where you find it doesnt work it is because your mirror control is not set to L when reverse gear is used.

Just out of interest how do you know what pack your car has?

I have lux and winter packs, however my car is a september 05 (55), vin shows the car as a 2006 model year.  The dipping mirror is not on my car, perhaps it's not enabled on vagcom or more likely it came in as a function after September 2005?

I would advise you to read the manual on how to set your mirror. Mine 'seemed' to not work because the mirror had not been set in the position you want it to auto dip to when in Reverse gear.

Try this.....

- Start car
- Select reverse gear, keep clutch in
- Set mirror control to L position
- Move the mirror to a dipped position ie where you want it to be when Reverse is selected
- When you are happy with the position put the car back into another gear and the mirror should rotate back up to where it was before.

From then on when you want to use your dipped mirror feature is will only work with reverse selected but also it must have the mirror control set to L.
