is it possible?
really need to improve my golf braking, as with all mk2's it locks up way to easy and in this weather i aint to confident with my stoppimg.
i know you gotta be on the ball with these things but after crashing my last golf in june i really saw a big problem brake wise.
so instead of bigger brakes i wanna go abs in the hope i can get more out of the car and beable to break like a more modern car.
thing is how?
what parts do need?
can it be done?
i also read somewhere the rhd cars were worse than lhd because the master cylinder was mounted on the right becauce the golf wasnt planned to be sold in the uk....is this true?
thanx a mil...............dave

g60 brakes are a big upgrade, cant say ive had a problem with the brakes locking though! front or rears? maybe a bit of practice would be the way to go if the fronts are locking, if the rears are have a look at the bias valve on the rear beam
-
It's Mk1s that have a problem sometimes as master cylinder is on the left, requiring linkages from the pedal which require careful setting up.
-
Have you got decent tyres on? Makes a big difference.
-
I know what you mean fella. I've got decent tyres on but can still lock up the fronts in winter routinely.
I just drive slower ;)
-
im talking real bad breaking here its bad enought in the summer.
last year i crashed my last mk2 gti 90.on a summers day in june, someone pulled out in front of me i stood on the breaks expecting to stop as the distance was okay and it locked up and wrote it off.
i got my 91 mk2 gti 3 months ago with new disc's and pads all round the wheels i got for it have got really good tyres on and it still locked up in good conditions when it should'nt of.
Now thats it chuffing freezing im to afraid to even fart near the brake pedal incase it skids nto a newsagents.
As for experiance ive done every brake test i can in all conditions. Ive tryed it pumping the breaks slow and fast rain, sun, frost ..........
After more than a few turtle heads popping out and a unusual amount of soiled underpants my conclution is either find out the proper set up or go for abs....
question is how?

No offence but if you can stop a car without skidding then you shouldn't be driving. The MKII brakes are fine on a standard car, the fact you can lock them is evidence of that. You need to be more gentle with the peddle.
How old are you BTW? I suspect you're used to modern cars that snatch the wheels and then the ABS jumps in and saves you. Aweful things.
If you are dead keen on fitting ABS it can be done. You'll need a complete Corrado, passat or MKIII Golf to take all the kit from and then you need to fit it. It'll cost £100's if not over £1K.
My advice is to learn to drive your car properly or sell it and buy 2000 onwards Corsa in which you'll find the brakes more to your liking.

P.S I turned my ABS off on the Rado as I hated it.

if i wanted to drive a chuffing coras i would....
i notice my driving seems to be the main point here Im 26 i grew up in ierland driving cars around feilds, mountains, dirt tracks ive been driving since i was 13 ive driven everycar ,lorry, tractor, plant, van and motor bike i could get my hands.
i know how to chuffing drive.
so i'll start aagain f**k the abs my car keeps locking up and im not the problem....so what else can it be?
-
Front or rear then?
Nick
-
also is it in pairs have you noticed or does 1 wheel lock up before the rest?
-
seems like the front nick....
usually left first then the right bites and sometimes it looses the rear end a little and swigs left like only 1 rear is catching once the fronts have slowed it down a little.. the tracking needs a little attention but that would,nt course this much chaous... im not talking slow speed here but neither excessive breaking either. In situations when most cars can handle it.
tyres....good
brakes good....
tyre pressure...good
my driving skills good......
i just dont undestand it
-
if your sure every thing is new then check the bias valve in the rear
see if the pads are stuck in the carrier
i would pump the pistons out on the front calipers frirst see if there is corrosion on them causing it to stick then release suddernely be carfull not to pump it all the way out though
then i would bleed all 4 brakes and see if there is air in there , i doubt it as you would have a spongey pedal ,
but after that i don't know
other things maybe a suspension bush if fubar'd and causing the car to pull ??
just have a really good luck and see , it maybe something small you have overlooked
-
i'm runnign 280's and done have locking problems, as said tho if you just stamp on the brakes they'll lock the wheels instantly, but feed them in you can feel the arse end of the car lifting somethign spectial and it stops pritty damb quick.
tho have had grabby brakes before, try chaning the pads , some cheep pads have some quite nasty tendancies so lob them in preferance for ebc ferdoo or some other good brand and them change the brake fluid, if that dosent cure it have the suspention and trackign / camber looked at
-
What brand are the tyres and how old are they?
-
have you checked this? http://members.dslextreme.com/users/vwtuning/vwtuning4.html

Mate if you want abs go for it. Its a nice peace of mind thing to have. Of the top of my head the things i thing you will need are
Hubs with wheel speed sensors in
Wiring for wheel speed sensors
Abs pump unit
Abs ECU? Not sure if its got one.
Brake pipes to go to Abs pump unit
Wiring diagrams
Prob a few more bits.
It wont be an easy thing to do but should def be possible. Why not be the first to give it a try. Good luck!
-
just looked at my G60 set up i have in my boot
and this had ABS :) so i guess some MK2;s had ABS of some sort
if your lucky you may find a car in a scrappy with ABS you can rob
personally i dislike early ABS systems as they were slow to react and i little unreliable
has any one ever driven a MK4 escort with ABS with beltsdriven off the drive shafts   :shocked:NW THAT TAKES SOME CONTROLLING

thanks peeps im gonna give the break balance a go in the morning while i fit my backbox..
the link says if the cars been lowered and the brake balance has'nt been ajusted then this can course problems.
i bought the car already lowered id say at least 60mm id even say 80mm coz its quit low, its so low when i took it to an exhaust garage last week they would'nt fit it because its to low to drive on the lifts.
as for the abs it seems like a biggy so i'll leave that until i know what im doing im guessing i'll be able to get all the bits of a mk3 so i'll see what happens.
thanx much

You might be better off finding a Seat Toledo - they're a lot closer to the G2 than the G3.
A guy on here has just hoicked an ABF out of one, so he might have all of the required still in his donor.

I would love to have a drive of your car. It sounds like a right laugh. Especially round a track!!
In all seriousness though, it sounds like the brakes need to be sorted quickly. Before you have another catastrophe.
-
lol@ dph it aint no laughtin matter its proper bum rumble stuff this...
-
IF one of ther rears 'appears' to be catching and swingning you left, then that may simply be a knacked/siezed rear right caliper. Simple fix that one. However, if your locking up as regularly as you say then something is amiss big time! I drive like the next person and I can honestly say my brakes don't lock up.
Good luck in resolving the issue - be a shame to loose another Gti to a bump.
-
£10 says it's got Nankang or Dark Horse or some other shyte tyres on it.
And the compensator valve's not correctly adjusted.
-
definately try pads first they are quite a common thing, if not my bet is on the callipers themselves, the bias valve on the back has nothing to do with the front brakes. good luck sorting it out, until then slow down!!

one way to test things involves makeing bit of noise and a wide open space,
just anchor up as hard as possibe and go look at the black lines, mismatched tyers can cause really ghey handeling even if both high quality tyers, eg an avon zv3 on one side and a yoko a539 on the other. zv3 will allways lock first in the dry but yoko lock first in wet. ( they let air n then and that unbalances everything )
