Title: MK5 equivalent of the 1.8T?

My brother is looking to get a new car soon, and I'm slowly persuading him into a Golf. He has a Hyudai Coupe F2 Evo at the moment which takes just over 6.5 seconds to 60. He was thinking about getting an 04-05 plate Coupe or another car around that age.

I was thinking of a MK4 Golf, but thought he may want the newer model then that. I was telling him about the 1.8T MK4, and he seemed to like the sound of that. I know the GTI's are quite quick, but since the 1.8T is quicker, what would the MK5 equivalent be?

(Most) of the 1.8T's were 150 BHP so the 2.0 GT would be equivalent to the BHP of the 1.8T, I think the 1.4 super charged / turbo charged engine (TSI?) is 170 BHP but this has had some poor reviews in terms of driveability.

The 1.8T is not slow...but having owned one I wouldn't say it was great in terms of performance.  By all accounts getting it remapped turned it into a different animal.

MKV GTI is the only way  :smiley:

depends what kind of budget he has, between 12-15K he could pick up a very nice MK5 GTI

one thing where the mk5 is light years ahead of the mk4 is handling, in standard form anyway. i liked my mk4 gti turbo but it has to be one of the worst handling cars/hot hatch ive ever owned imho.

He must have some serious mods as the fastest hyundai coupe took over 8 secs to get 60, i remember my old saxo vtr being quicker!

Get him to have a test drive of a few models, a nice mk4 anniversary model would be a good buy if he cant get a mk5. There 180bhp and will remap to around 210-220bhp!

1.8T is a great engine but like been said the Mk4 needs some suspension mods to get the best out of it.  The 2.0T is so much better, a lot smoother as standard and remapped (the 1.8T once remapped was quite raw so to speak).

If he has the budget for a Mk5 then the 2.0T is the new 1.8T  :nerd:

the 20VT was a very capable engine but the 2.0TFSi is much more capable a k04 will see 340+ and a 3071 will see 440-580 depending on how far you're willing to go, also the 2.0T with a K04 will bull all the way through to 6700rpm rather than when the 1.8T gave up at 5500rpm.

much superior engine and a worthy decendat of the 1.8T
