can anyone tell me how to fill the gearbox oil up on a mk 2 gti 16v? lots of work has been done on this car and i dont wan2 cock it up now lol

Theres been a number of threads on changing the gearbox oil where people have really f##ked it up. For example, there was one guy who poured the new oil into the flywheel timing hole, ruining his clutch in the process.
My advice... Read up on this carefully before starting, as it doesn't look as straightforward as you might think.

Says it takes 2 litres but you'll never get that in an old box so dont worry if it takes a little less than that before oil pours out the filler hole.

I've always managed two litres! That was after removing the 5th gear end cap after changing the 5th ratio. But even on normal oil changes, two always goes in.

As a sidenote IIRC, the earlier models had the filling hole on the box lower down by about 3 cm - which meant you couldn't get all the oil in.
You can either jack up that side of the car so its level, then get the full 2l in, or fill till it drains out, then add the remainder to the speedo cable hole - but be careful you don't drop the pinion gear into the box!
Its easily done - just get hold of a large sump/box key first and do it right ;)

I find the best way on these is to remove the reverse light switch on top of the gearbox:
: drain the box oil, refit drain bolt
: remove reverse light switch 22mm sensor on top of box
: put 2l of oil through the reverse light switch hole, is much easier than arsing around with pipes or pumps filling at the level bolt
: refit reverse light switch
: take for a 5 minute test drive and leave on a level surface for 5 minutes
: remove level bolt, let oil drain untill its a light trickle, refit bolt
JOB DONE! :smiley:

its easier to use the speedo hole, for one thing its much larger than the reverse switch hole (unless you mean the old MK1 style ones?)

yup speed'o cable works best ...think you need a t40 bit 1' screw, pull out the cable,,..easy
i use a small funnel and old peice of the pipe that connects to the isv...
i used a wheel nut and open end spanner to get the plug out to.

I've seen the T40bit screws you mention, and I thought 'bugger' but then I looked closer and it still had spanner flats on! Dunno what VW were thinking there :grin:
oh and as for a funnel, what I did was chop the bottom off one of my hearbox oil bottles, and used that. At a push I've also used a bit of plastic sheet rolled up to make a funnel shape :)

really? I thought most/all bottles of gearbox oil came with those pull out funnel/spout things

I was using redline MTL, yes they have a long thin spout but its still pretty difficult to get it down to the speedo hole with all the 'stuff' in the way. So i emptied one of the bottles into a jug and cut the bottom off!
