sorry guys
ive tried to search this topic.and cant find the overview answers i need
my old man is giving me grief over buying petrol-think victor meldrew on speed!! and wants me to justify why i want a mkv gti vs a tdi.
and to be honest with all the reviews the tdi gets why am i looking at a gti, other than fact i am a 43yr old still trying to realise/acheive that teen dream of a proper hot hatch.
i never managed first time around ,but i had a 1 mk3 gti for 9months when i was 27 and it was the best car i ever had, i loved it so a bit of nostalgia plays a part of going for the gti.
so..... pros and cons of each.?
is there much in it from a performance/owning/cost/maintenence point of view or is it do i want my hot hatch  or do i have a deisel??
thanks in advance

GTI all the way and I suspect being a GTI forum most people will say the same mate!
Diesel = more expensive than petrol for starters and is only really worth it if you do big mileage. The GTI has great fuel economy anyway; I regularly get 36, 37, 38mpg if im cruising on the motorway.
But when you plant your right foot, nothing will make you smile more than the GTI. Test drive both and you will see what I mean.
Im nearly 32 and still seriously into my hot hatches and will be forever. Nothing beats them.
And one more thing; who cares what your dad thinks. Surely daddy is not still making decisions for you?!!!! (Unless he is the one paying for it!!)
-
 na but he can moan for england bud and sometimes it aint woth the agg!
its always gonna be the gti mate but i needed to know if it was so close as an overall comparrison i needed to look into the tdi options.
thanks for the input.
muchly appreciated

GTI all the way & at 43 i hope you are still not living at home.I'm in my 40's own home etc & if my dad had a go at my choice of car he would get a quick sod off. :smug:
-
am thinking shouldnt have put the dad comment on there lmao!
i dont give a toss what he thinks really but he had a valid point that echoed a few others comments...
so i wanted to find out from some golf peeps who knew better than i do
wether the slight lack of oompf is compensated by the torque later up the speedo
wether the mpg was that different to warrant the option
wether the looks were that different, when i walk upto the car in the car park i wanna smile, will a tdi do that, i doubt it but i wanted confirmation.
and all them silly bits that matter when you buy a car.
i loved my previous gti and i know i want one again so thought i research it and see if its worth the extra dosh paying out for the gti!
thanks again for the input!

Agreed with the advice above - test drive them!
When I park in a supermarket, I park so the car's facing me when I return. Biggest smile on my face you'll ever see!
Have a look at both and compare them visually but drive them too. Believe me, once you've test-driven the GTI, all the fancy ideas of fuel-saving, mileage etc fly out the window.
For me, I've never bettered 35mpg motorway. Why? Because every opportunity I get, I can't resist flooring it.
-
Diesel is just plain not cool either . People have gone with me in my 1.4 petrol rather than a 1.9 tdi. Sounds better, feels better and you'll never regret it .
-
ETTO, as said take them for a test drive but i wouldnt bother with a std TDI, go with the GT170 as a comparrison as its alot closer to a GTI than the std TDI would be and around the same cash.
-
thanks CM.
thats nice peice of info, the sort or stuff i needed!
yeesh...more research and more test drives lol!

Your dad sounds just like my brother.. I usually consult him occasionally on stuff I do. So when I told him Im getting a Gti (he has the GTTDi) i had to sit and listen to hours of comments about how Im wasting my money, and should be saving etc etc..
So I went and got myself an R32! He very rarely comments on my decisions now.... esp after I let him borrow it from time to time
-
Sounds like your mind is already made up!!! If you've always wanted a hot hatch, and loved your MK3 GTI, then you will simply have no regrets and disappointments with the MK5.
At the end of the day, if you can afford to run the petrol motor of the GTI then I see no reason to not buy one!
Although I can't advise you on the diesel, I will do my best for the GTI:
MPG - I think a real life example is good for you. Earlier this year I was driving 50miles to get to university every week. It took 1 hour to do the journey. 30mins spent on 30-50mph townish roads, the other 30 mins spent up the M25, cruising at 70. Each week, I was getting 42mpg without fail. No traffic.
I have since changed universities, and my route is a 17.2 mile journey which is mainly 30-40mph town driving with traffic here and there. Each day, I don't get below 32mpg.
Bear in mind that the above examples are just driving sensibly and striving to get good mpg.
I will make no bones about it - when I am trying, the mpg WILL go down to 22-24mpg. When driving as hard as possible, I haven't seen it go below 20.3mpg. But you really have to thrash it to get that low!!
Range: With a mixture of driving styles, I see no reason for you to get less than 280 miles to a tank. A full tank of driving sensibly will get you 350miles quite easily. Lol, I'm sure someone will come along in a minute and say 'hang on, I can't get anywhere near those figures!' Every car is different, and everyone's driving styles are different!
I think if you get the diesel, you will always be thinking "hmm I really wanted that GTI" !
Hope this helps you a bit

Spent 6 yrs driving the mk4 GT Tdi 130. Great for torque, pulls well from 1500 revs and was a pleasure to drive. Handled like a pig though
I considered the higher spec GT Tdi on the mk5 when i sold the mk4 in November but didn't even bother test driving them. Thought they were over priced for one, but they just don't look like the (petrol) GTi.
the GT diesel is still a nice looking motor but not a Gti. I went for the petrol Gti, for the looks as much as the drive.
If the 'head' had the final decision it would have been the GT Tdi again, but life's too short
-
haha... i think one he drives it he might chnage his mind also!
thanks for the input. i do very few miles daily and only slightly more at wkends, and most of that is in restricted areas so i doubt i,ll rack up miles or low mpg in those instances.
yep yep yep... my mind is made up and mid feb is the planned day. ill get two mates looking out for the right car soon as i can confirm my finances.... even told the GF she cant have er xbox360 for her birthday as every penny is put away for a car.... (so its back to the dishes and ironing now lol )
i,ll still test drive the tdi. also the fiesta st-old shape and i also think the audiA3. jsut to make sure ive given myself enough options...but i know what i wanna be sitting in! :)
big fanx for all your help gang

if its any consolation, i had exactly the same delimna!
my sister has a 140 GT TDI and compared to my car, it is terrible! starting it is like starting a tractor, soo loud and the vibrations are aweful. just like a golf plus i drove. also, the interior instruments, seats, steering wheel, everything is just ordinary, not special.
however to someone on "the outside" trying to decide between the two it isn't as clear cut. yes theres the petrol costs but really that wasn't nearly enough to put me off even in the summer when it was £1.20 odd.
it almost sounds like you've made ur choice and u just need reassurance its the right thing to do! if u think with ur head, go with the gti, if u think with ur heart go with the gti!
any ideas what gti ull be getting then?
-
how many gti,s are there?
fsi?
gt?
There's only the GTI.
MKV GTI
MKVI GTI is the replacement out this year.
FSI = fuel stratified injection
TFSI = turbocharged fuel stratified injection --> all MKV Golf GTIs have 2.0 litre TFSI engine.
Ignore TSI/FSI/TDI/GTTDI - they're all inferior models. They're not GTI!!!

THANKS STEALTH. AGAIN PUKKA INFO FROM YOU GUYS!

I went for the diamond black. Love it but it's an arse to keep clean. I've seen the steel grey in flesh and it looks gorgeous and some of the silver motors round here look lush too.
-
Its all about the noise for me!! Diesels just sound crap end of story, and the torque arriving all together wears thin after 30 mins..
True car lovers go for petrol IMO.
The way petrol prices are going  as well its unleaded all the way for me...

Just keep showing your old man this, until he gets the message :

thanks man. i,ll watch that again and again!
i cant beleive prices vary so much based on almost purely the colour!
almost identical cars but the black seems more expensive, due to popular demand i presume??
think its black but i do like the grey, just had silver cars last two so its gotta be differnet this time around methinks :undecided:

Before I bought the GTI (Edition 30 variant) I had a GTTDI 140 and believe me when I say that there is a world of difference between them. The GTI is a proper hot hatch. The TDI is good and no mistake, it just doesn't get the old juices flowing like the GTI does. I'm *cough* 44 years old and have had my car for nearly 2 years now and it still gives me a tingle of excitement every time I get into her
