my faithfull mk2 has got a case of manflu well he has blown his head gutted my question is how common is it for the head to be dead aswell as the gasket as i have a quote of £200 to scim and change gasket but i have to supply the gaskets and new cam belt mind u the belt is my doin as i requested it to be done at the same time is this a good price would like to do it myself but thinkin it may be outa my league one thing for sure the golf will be back cheers :cool:

rare for the heads to go but for the price of a skim i normaly skim them

£200 sounds sensible money, if it's a job well done.
Get a new cambelt, gasket and head bolts shipped over from Southampton GSF - they'll ship it over to East Cowes on Red Funnel for about £5-6.

cheers but already got the parts been thinkin of doin it myself just the weather and conifedence is stoppin me was wonderin if the head is likly to crack it has not over heated but does build alot of backpresure when run for 10mins and it went 200 miles from home like they do hey lol nursed home and didnt over heat just preasure and steam out the headtank

Crack the head-bolts off in in stages in the same order as they are to be torqued down and you should be able to release the head safely.
As it's off you'd do well finding a PB engine head - bigger valves and GTI cam. Screw down pennies under the injector collets to seal them off. Add a GTI downpipe and you'll be chasing GTI horsepower without going to all the trouble of fitting injection.

leave it to the pro's m8 its not as simple as undoing a few bolts and whipping it out if the timings out you'll be in big touble when you put it back in.
new timing belt and gaskets are must aswell as getting it skimmed if your keeping it for a while its just another job done that wont need doing in the future and while your at it do the rocker cover gaskit aswell mk2's use a cork type roker/gaskit get 1 from an early mk3 there made of rubber and last alot longer.
if you want a good price stay clear of main stream garages there a bunch of robbing bastards. With a credit crunch in full swing a mobile macanic/dab hand with a spanner bloke is your best bet then get it sent to the mainland where prices are alot cheaper as said before gsf southampton is your best bet to sorce the parts you need.

i like the pennie idea deamon lol i already have the head kit so will be doin rocker gasket i hope lol but its all there i will check on its return as goes to a local vw entusiast so i feel its in safe hands goes in tomoro will let ya all know how it goes i hope i will have it back by the end of the week god i hope lol a week without my car good job i can pinch the missuses lol :smug:

Don't use a cork one, use the rubber one (and corresponding studs) from the later Corrado/Passat 8V motor - much less likely to leak.
