Title: heating
Post by: SteveS on 29 December 2008, 12:22
During this cold weather, i have been using the heating in the car. no surprise there... however mine seems to take quite a while to warm up, seems to take too long...
Anyone else think theirs takes a long time or is it just me???

Tend not to crank the heater up until the car is warm. Usually takes about 10mins

Yeah I don't bother with the heating until the car engine temp is up to optimal. Until then, I use the heated seats.

Of course, in my old car, there was no such thing as heated seats, so I sat and drove in the m-f-ing cold until the car was warmed up and I'd put the heating on full blast.

nope, no lights.

i would get the dealers to check it out then, something small but is the coolant you use the VW recomended type? that could be an issue, not sure  :undecided:

extra vest mate needed!!

Does the car warm up to 90 degree's withing 5 minutes road running time??? if it doesnt maybe engine thermostat, but that would normally give you sh!te mpg and you would know about that in the pocket. Mine takes about 5 minutes to get heat inside at a good temp.

funny u should say that, i have oftern thought my mpg is sh!te.. the comp always says around 23mpg and i dont drive hard at all most the time... especially this time of year i have been driving very slow...

where is 90 degrees on the temp gauge? middle? is so then no, nowhere near

It should be middle or there abouts, I agree with steve, sounds like thermostat issues or temp sensor which old 20v engine had issues with funnily enough

yes she should run at 90 degrees, which is dead middle of the gauge, and should be at temperature no more then 10 minutes, unless your in the artic circle!!.If the engines running too cold, the ecu will think the cars cold and give it more fuel, so mpg will suffer. If you live outa town area steve, id expect 29-30, but if you live in inner city, lots of traffic lights, traffic cues, then 23-24 is the norm for inner city crawl.Running the car on economy ( without aircon and Not using electric seat warmers) will improve mpg by 1-2 miles per gallon.
silly but true

Yep, 10 minutes for the Temp to get dead centre. At least its alot quicker than what my GT TDI used to take.............

Yeah I echo what everyone else says really.

About 5 mins until warm air starts coming into the cabin

About 10 minutes for the temperature guage to read 90 degrees.

I have noticed that this engine takes a bit longer to warm up than my old 1.8T...... I just put this down to the fact that my radiator was likely to be in better nick than the old one!

Was -4 on the drive to work this morning an took 18 minutes to reach 90. That was driving at normal speed and not going above 2000 / 2300 rpm.

I need to get out more.

Due to bust batcave door I was parked on the drive last night. Not so warm this either but Im quite sure my outside temp reading is pretty inaccurate. Was reading 4 degrees and always seems to read the same whenever its cold??

But does heat up pretty quick... usually within 2miles I have warm air coming through. 5-6 minutes and we a re running at bang on 90 (slap bang in the middle)

I recall a thread a short while back where the temp needle was being discussed and Im quite sure that everyone's was bang on in the centre. So if yours is not then I would defo get it checked!

its center, just takes like 20mins to get there, but when i drive off in the morning, it is traffic for the first 15mins..

I agree that seems a bit excessive warm up time but cars can be different.
for me 10 minutes for guage to hit centre mark (plus add some more to let the oil warm up too  :nerd:)
Im sure either the ECU or the increased fuel consumption would indicate a problem if there was one.......
I also tend to go 2500 up to 3k in warmup phase

You always use more fuel when you start the car up for the first 10 minutes or so, even more so when its cold like it is now. Add the fact that you have 15 minutes of traffic lights and that is going to dent your MPG Steve. I do a lot of town driving and have been very impressed with the 2.0T for economy, I also have a manual and not a DSG which might help me as its easy to stick in 5th and just cruise (even more so with the remap :D).

Just a thought.

mine manual too :)

well went out just now, and just normal driving, got warm in 5mins or so, and up to temp(90) in around the 10. so seems the traffic seems to really effect the heating

If you leave the aircon in auto mode no heat will come out until the car is warm, you can sometimes get heat before this time by manually putting on the blowers if your that bothered.  I tend to leave it and put the bum wamers on  :smug:

TDI's do tend to take a little longer - I notied this with the wife's Mk4
