Title: Is it possible??
Post by: Mixologist on 14 June 2004, 22:21
Is it possible to wire the headlights/sidelights in so that they are ingnition live??

im getting pissed off leaving them on by mistake

yeah, cept when you wanna get outta the car but leave your lights on so no one hits your car while its parked on a buisy street your gonna be f**ked, and more to the point they will also always be on during the day just like a volvo ;)

Hmm, i wonder where you got the idea for this thread from!!?!  :D

If you want i can tell you how to fit a buzzer. If not then, having sidelights on all the time mightn't be too bad, i always have mine on anyway!

how do you fit a buzzer? that could be usefull  ;D

Hmmmmmmmmm, i wonder?!?!?!?!  One of us had to ask!

wire a buzzer into a wire that becomes live when you turn the sidelights on and earth it on the same point as the one that joins when you open the door. then when you open the door with the lights on the buzzer will sound. I would look on mine and tell you which wire it is, but can't until friday.

You need:

A 12V Buzzer,
About a metre of wire
EITHER Solder/Electric tape.

Take off the bit under the steering wheel with the documents holder in it. Attach the buzzer to the inside of this. Take off the door plunger on the drivers side. Follow the wires into the car from the switch. Take a wire from the black side of the buzzer, through the hole, and either solder it to the door switch, or tape it. Take a wire from the red side of the buzzer to the top right connector of the heated rear window switch. Jump in car, shut door. Switch on lights, open door. Buzzer now sounds. Easy as pie.

If you want to be certain which wire to use for the heate rear window, take off the switch, put a multimaeter across the top two connectors, when you switch the lights on, you should have 12V. If you have a non electrolytic buzzer, it doesn't matter which you put it in, if you do it must be posititve as the door switch is earthed, and thus needs 12V on the other terminal to create the potential difference.

Ask any questions if you feel thats not explained properly!!!

Either i explained it all wrong, and made it sound so complicated that i put you off, or your doing it sometime, then gonna let me know? Or did you decide against it in the end??!

Ok, i obviously did write that a bit confusingly then! ::)

Right lets start by saying: you want to have a buzzer when a) the lights are on and b) when the doors open. The buzzer has two terminals, therefore a terminal for a) and a terminal for b)  The terminals have to have a potential difference across them to work. This is not a problem as the door pin is earthed. So terminal b) simply attaches to the existing wire headding to the door switch, either byu cutting the wire and joining the new one, or attching it to the same spade of the switch itself. Thats the easy part.

For terminal a) you need a 12V supply to supply the PD across the buzzer. Seeing as you need it to be also to the lights, it is perhaps obvious it needs to go to a positive terminal of a bulb, but a bulb that only lights when the lights are on. There are quite a few of these. Two in the boot, directly from the tail lights (not practical in this instance!!) In the dash switches, heated window, fogs, hazards etc.. the heater display, the speedo lights etc.... Its up to you which you use, i used th heated rear window as it easy. So, take out the switch. There are four terminals. Hoping its clear that two are for the resistor in the glass, and two are for the lights in the switch? Its easy to determine which is which, Switch on the headlights, and switch the switch off. Put a multimeter across the top terminals, there will be like 12.7V or thereabouts. If its minus, swap the leads around. When the display is positive the red lead from the multimeter is the positive one, remember which terminal it is. Now attach a bit of wire to the terminal, and stick the switch back in. From underneath, find this wire and attach it to the terminal a) on the buzzer.

Ok, i hope thats the general gist of the actual electronics there. I trtied to go into detail, so you understood whats happening, and if happens not to work, you can remedy it yourself

The econd part is basically mounting the buzzer, and locating the terminals and where to run the wire.

Its worth noting that one doesn't have to cut any wires anywhere, or even solder them. It does work if you tape it etc... but may not last. I recommend taping it first before soldering.

Right, i hope thats it explained it a bit better! Let me know if not! ;D

Cheers mate, thats made alot more sense to me now :)

I'll give it a go when i've got some spare time and i'll let you know how it goes.

Also, i take it you have done some sort of electronis course??

just read posts i think its illegal (construction & use regs) to not have some means of switching on sidelights without the ignition being on

Glad that made sense! I always assume that people just know what i'm talking about, but they never do!!

A Level in Electronics, Physics, Science, Maths. They all cover electronics. Going to have an MPhys in Physics as well. Always been intersted in Electronics... Going to make my own alarm soon...

Eh??  ???

Thats not what we want to do! Are you thinking that i'm re wiring it to stop the sidelights coming on? All thats happening is an extra feed from the interior lighting circuit, to a buzzer, but only if the doors open!

Ok, read the first post again... Is that what you meant Carrie, its illegal to rewire it to be ignition controlled? Forgot thats what started all this!!  :-[

Respect,

i thought you had done something like that, mentioning PD gave it away a bit, im just finishing a foundation year for engineering and i've done some basic elctronics building astable oscillators and building basic transistor circuits.  Can build the circuits easy as pie, and if someone was to explain to me what was going in i'd understand it, but im one of those people who has got to see it before i can tell what it is going to do!!

And once agaiin cheers again for that, i'll give it a go when my exams are over.

Had meant to ask what you were studying! It all rests on me getting a good grade in Maths, exams in the morning, and i've not done any proper ervision yet, so i'm off to do some!

(did it all make sense that time by the way, or will it only after you've attempted it??!)

It should make more sense once i have done it.  But i'll follow what you have said and it should go ok, as long as im paying attention  :-\

Hopefully im off to do a Beng in mechanical engineering, just gotta get through the next week of exams and its three months off for me  ;D ;D

I gotta maths exam in the morning, but i've spent the last two weeks with my head buried in the books so it should go ok, good luck with 'em mate, there the worlds biggest pain in thre rectum

Yeah, i've got P2, if that means anything to you at all!! Depends on if you did A level maths?!

It really is simple to do, i'd be very surprised if you couldn't do it!! It literally is a two wire circuit! Although, you could make it three. If you wanted it to be ignition controlled, etc..

Yeah, does to me, but i don't know what the syllabus would be.  I didnt take maths further thatn AS.

yeah, sounds simple enough, as of next week i should have it done and dusted

Who doesn't!!!??

I don't want to have to do it, but i need it for physics  :'(

You any good at Maths though, generally its a hard subject, which puts the majority of people off? Oh, and Stats is THE WORST!!! Pure, and mechanics are the best..
Title: Re:Is it possible??
Post by: Mixologist on 21 June 2004, 22:09
STATS SUCKED, pure is ok, but at least applied maths you can visualise what the hell is going on!!!
