since you dont say what car you have, I'll take a guess at it being a 1.6-1.8 model, non-G60.  If so, have a good read of this link:
http://brokevw.com/TO.html

If you're lucky its a cable, release finger or bearing problem, which can be fixed with the box on the car.  If you're unlucky you have a hole thru the release plate, which is a gearbox off job!

This may seem obvious, but have you checked that the pedal is operating the arm on the gearbox. Have someone press the pedal whilst you check in the engine bay.
Every time the symptoms you describe have happened to me it has been a broken cable. Check the simple things before fearing the worst and most expensive!

yeah the end cap is removable but it should also have that green plate, it might have been painted over if the box was refurbed.  Dont take the end cap off if you can help it, you'll loose most of uyour oil and also theres a selector rod that sticks out here, if you remove it the box needs stripping down to refit.  no point risking that when you can do all the repairs thru the green cap!  just make sure you buy a newun.

just a simple question the clutch cable is not connected to the release lever and when i push the pedal in it stays on the floor could it be the self adjust mech thats failed or the full cable
