Title: 1.8T VS 1.8 16V
Post by: StephenEggo on 14 June 2004, 13:45
What do you guys think the diifference in performance between the 1.8T vs 1.8 16v. What is quicker in a straight line? Would the Mk2 1.8 16v leave it for dead in a country road in the right hands?

You can only get two standard variations of the 1.8T. These are the Standard 1.8T with 150 BHP and the 180BHP anniversery edition. The one I meant to say was the 150 BHP one.

the mk216v pisses on the 150bhp version :D
would beat it in a straight line and also on a winding road.

mk216valves are so much more fun as well, handling is razor sharp and they pick up the pace very well.

my car is a beast after 3.5k revs, it fookin flies all the way to about 7.2/7.5k revs. :D
sounds beautiful 2.

id say that the 1.8t is avery nice engine tho, and can be easlily modded to give out very nice bhp.
but my winner would be the 1.816valve, but then of course i would say that, i own one!

I also have a Mk2 16v and it handles magic. I've had the car for just over two months now and it is great fun. I just replaced the front two shocks as the front offside one was rusting( It had probarly been on the car since new). You should never replace one shock as it can have an effect on the handling. The car now handles even better with the new shocks.

i've heard too many stories about 16vs ruining the day for the drivers of TT 180s.

personally, i reckon its a close run thing and as long as you dont hit a long straight where max speeds come into play the difference will be arbitary with a 180.

my shocks have been on my car (mk2) since new, and they are crusty as. gonna chage them next week.

oh yeah personally i think the mk2 8v is quicker than 16v and 20vt  ;) :P

1.3 is the best!! ;D Not much more than 50BHP, who needs more!!!?

Incidentally, all four shocks are original, just had the front ones changed though. (16 years) I'm impressed by that!! Even only on the second battery! :D

I assume you mean a 1.8T Golf. If so.. as said above a standard mk2 16v will nudge past the mk4 on a straight, and annihilate it on the twisties (it's common knowledge that the mk4 sacrificed performance for comfort). Though, as most people are aware, throwing 400 quid at a 1.8T to get it chipped/remapped will leave a mk2 16v driver looking unhappy in your rear view mirror (at least.. until you need to turn a corner on the not-so-great standard suspension). Not sure what ?400 will get out of a valver because I've never owned one. So to answer your original question... it's all a matter of how much money you have to throw at either car.

Chris.

i have it on good knowledge that the max bhp a valver engine can go to is 197bhp(not forced induced in any way)

you would bore it out to a 2.2 litre and it would give you a 0-60 time of around 5.5 secs :o

but throwing money into the occasion could meen that the possibilties on engine conversion is endless :D

i like the origional question, cos the valver wins :D

i've been contemplating, just for fun, buying an old 16v and shoving nitrous with a 200bhp pack on for fun, and take it to Inters next year. Make it a complete sleeper. (Should give it between 310-330bhp depending on how good the original engine still is).
