Title: worst day of my life
Post by: lewis on 14 June 2004, 13:36
 Hi all

Thought I would say hello again since I haven't been on the site for a few months. I was in the back seat of my m8's mk2 golf when he decided to crash into a concrete wall separating the m6 junction 6 from the A38 by Birmingham. We apparently hit it at 60 MPH and totally wrote the car off. It took them 2 hours to cut me out of it as the front passenger seat had pinned me to the back of the seat I was sitting in. Well after spending over a month in hospital and a month convalescing at home I asked my wife to bring me the computer down so I could say hello and see what's been happening in the world of golfgti. I certainly have a lot of reading to do.

i remember hearing about this on the local news (if its the same accident)
From the pictures i saw i'd say you're lucky to be alive, and its so sad that not all in the car were as fortunate  :-\

Best wishes on the road to recovery mate

Chris.

Thanks for all your comments. Tim was a very good friend of mine and will be missed by everone who new him. He died instantly from what the police have said so he didn't suffer. The drive Martin actually got out of the car himself when they cut the roof off and left hospital after only a few days. I was very lucky to live. No one at the crash site thought I would make it. Apparently I went through over twenty units of blood in the first day alone. But I'm fine now and should hopefully be out of my wheel chair by sometime next month. I don't think there is anything left of the car worth having especially when the police have finished all of there checks. I am hoping to go to Santa pod as one of my m8's is racing there but I will have to see as at the moment I can only sit up for about 2 hours max but if I do come I would love to see you all.

Sorry to hear that dude. At least your recovering tho! What caused the accodent may i ask? It seems like a bit of bad outcome considering it was only a 60mph impact. It sorta makes you wonder just how safe our Mk2s are

Glad your ok tho mate.

It's difficult to say what caused the crash as I was asleep & Martin has no memory of the accident. It was at 6:00 am and we were travelling back from seeing a friend play a gig in London. So we had been travelling for quite a while. We were wheel clamped down there and had to walk to the main office to pay ?150 fine to get the clamp off. This took well over 4 hours to do and we were all tired after this. From what the police say there was some footage of the car drifting off towards the hard shoulder just before we crashed so they are assuming the driver fell asleep but there is no proof of this. I own an mk2 golf myself and have decided to sell it as I don't think I could sit in it again let alone drive one. I still have my mk1 and mk4 golf but I doubt I will de able to drive either of them this year.

damn thats nuts.. certainly sounds like he fell asleep.. years ago i was in a friends mk1 coming back in the early hours when he started to drift off while driving, luckily i was awake enough to realise we were heading across the road, yelled and smacked him awake in time.. so damn scary.. he was pretty shook..

to lose a friend like that is unimaginable. r i p

Its a shame to hear such bad news, but at least your ok. Just hope that his famiily aren't the sort to overcome their grief by sueing the driver for being asleep, that would be so unkind.

Best wishes for you, and hopefully you'll have the courage to drive again one day.

Thanks again. Nice to know the golf community stick together. I don't think Tim's family intend to sue as they are all good friends. It was after all an accident and martin was and still is one of my closest friends. We were all wearing seat belts at the time. Its the only reason I'm still here to tell the story. From what the police have told me when we hit the wall the car went directly up.when we hit the floor the roof creased down the left side hitting Tim in the head but I only received a glancing blow because my belt got wrapped round my neck and kept me down. I had a lot of luck that day. The first person on the scene was an off duty paramedic who witnessed the crash and was with us within 30 seconds. his quick thinking and prompt arrival is the only reason I'm here today. :'(

You are very lucky then. A lot of people would sue, they dont have any standards. Best nt to think about what might have happened, cos you'd be wondering all your life. Best thing is to try and get on with your life, but thats probably easier said than done eh!? I bet your thinking, it always happens to other people?! And your lucky that you weren't in a convertable, that same sort of thing happened on the A303 a few years back, lets just the roof didn't hit her head, the floor did. You can guess that the head stayed where it was, but the body didn't. It can be good to look at others more unfortunate, to realise you were Damn lucky.

Really sorry to hear about this, and I have a lot of sympathy for what you are going through, as a very similar thing happened to me about 12 years ago. Fortunatly, not being able to recall any of the event helped go a long way in my revovery. Memories are often forgotten, but people never should be.
