We have a Golf 8v 2ltr GTI mk3 and have just recently had a problem with the car whilst driving.
Heres the picture, were driving along at about 60mph and all of a sudden the car dies on us and the oil light comes up on the dash, this has happened a fare few times now. The car does`nt shudder to a halt, just simply dies like there`s no more life left.
Now we changed our fuel to Shell Optimax a few months back now after reading how good it is and that. A few people at work reckon it could be a blocked fuel line or sludge build up and that i should use REDEX.
I dont like using this sh!t cos we had a 205 gti and had nothing but problems after.
Now could it be the Immobolizer, ive heard on here that as the car gets older the immobolizer tends to play up, is this the case, i dont know.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I am havin the same problem only at lower speeds. Car is fine with revs up high, and usually fine down low but every so ofter with no warning power is gone! Its been driving me mad.
I have the car booked into RSR for some tuning and a cat bypass as i know i have some pressure problems in the exhaust system. I am hoping this may resolve it! If not i think its gonna have to be the nearest VW garage for me! Never thought about the immoblizer though which is due for a health check!
Strangely enough though i too am now using optimax and the car was not doing this a few months ago!!! Hmmmm...

I had the excact same problem on my 1997 8v gti, and initially thought it was the alarm/immob, but it was the main ECU relay, relay position no 3, cost me 11.79 from main dealer & now the problems solved, apparently its a commen problem on Mk3 8v. Steve Cresswell has answered this question a couple of time in The Golf, also if ur car is 95-96(i think) VW dont list the part for it but it is there. If need be I can post the part no for ya if you want(later cos I aint at home)
Hope this helps

Did fitting new ECU Relay no 3 fix your prob??and do you know the part number?
As I have been suffering for the past 6mnth with what would appear the sane problem.
