Title: GTI Airconditioning
Post by: philadams16V on 13 June 2004, 19:21
Anyone know how much extra air-con effects petrol consumption.  MPG on computer doesn't work so I have no way of telling? ::)

why is it supposed to drain fuel econemy?

Is it because the air con unit needs alot of energy to run?

if thats the case then im guessing 30mpg will be more like 26-27mpg with the aircon on.

yaeh hes a lucky git!

Air con causes big drop in mpg on mine...combined with big drop in power because it's a mechanical system. I reckon about 24-25mpg on a gentle run with the air con blasting. But you get the same drop opening the windows and sunroof so it's all the same in the end!!
Get the system checked out by an expert ? helped the system on my 1991 work much better and more efficiently. The bloke I used to get it done was awesome and after some lying git told me the whole system needed to be drained, flushed and rebuilt (?350) this bloke did a recharge for about ?65.
Even though mine worked OK once it had been recharged with new refrigerant it was incredible how much better it worked.

Thanks for the replies to the airconditioning questions guys ;D.

I use AutoGlym bumper care and a sponge to keep the bumpers black.  Its expensive but its amazing stuff, once u've built a few layers up it becomes very durable and long lasting  ;) :P

Old aircon systems use a lot more than the moden ones.

I also use the auto glym stuff, brings up any old grey looking plastic great works well on dorr handles too
