Hmmm... but what about those of us who have modded cars. I was aware of the issue on stock cars but VW would use any excuse not to honour the warranty. As long as it is only the cam follower, it shouldn't be an expensive fix, but the US site worried me when people listed a new pump and camshaft - sounds expensive to me. Don't VW have uprated camshafts - I'm sure there was a piece on this in a recent issue of Golf+ - maybe I should uprate it as a precaution. :undecided:

Mine is only a low miler and even I will get the follower checked at the next service. I expect to have about 17k miles on mine at 2 years old at the end of March. Even if I decided to keep it for 6 years that would only equate to 51k miles, so at the moment it isn't a worry for me (hopefully!!)
High milers IMO will need an annual check, but even then I'd just be looking at replacing the follower at the first sign of abnormal wear.

That makes me nervous as mine has been out of warranty for nearly a year now.

I am concerned about this on my A3 2.0 TFSI as well. It is a MY07 with 56.5k on the clock so will be out of warranty very soon. I plan on checking the follower myself and posting up some pics.
I've not noticed any misfires and have no DTCs however I believe the cam follower should be checked regularly for wear even if you are stock and stock+ from what I have read on vwvortex.
BTW does anyone here know what revision of cam the BWA engine should have (mines a BWA)? Am really hoping its a B.

this is known VW problem and is in the VW RedBook, VW have upgrade camshaft , if your camshaft has the part number afective u have to change, I´ll post the number tomorrow, its wery easy for u guys to check what part number u have.

So is this something that would be a massive undertaking for a garage to check for you? I am thinking of dropping mine in for a check before the warranty expires but i figure unless there is a problem they are unlikely to want to get involved in taking the engine apart, what do you think?

Here is a summary of how I understand the problem on 2.0 TFSIs:
Your Cam Follower will wear in time as it is made of a softer material than the Cam. Therefore you need to periodically check the condition of your Cam Follower (I intend to check mine asap).
If your Cam Follower fails it is likely that the HPFP will do some damage to the Cam as it will be coming into direct contact with the Cam surface.
There are 2 variations of the 200 ps 2.0 TFSI Cams - A variant and B variant which both have 3 lobes. It seems to be a bit of a lottery which Cam people will have (it does not seem to be tied down age). The A variant Cams are one piece while the B variant Cams are two piece. Cam failure seems to be more likely on the A variant Cam.

It's easy to check (the newer 07 cars more so than the pre 07 ones) but the unfortunately the VW garages won't do it unless there is a fault.

....At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, my VW dealer is happy to check it when I ask.
