After yest morning, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=100024.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=100024.0) ,
I have noticed that my speedometer needle seems to "dance/tremble" between 0-10 and eases higher/faster i go
Any ideas what is causing this all off a sudden? :undecided:
Speedo cable loose?
Thanks in advance
-
Isn't it your cable wearing out ie the nylon cog on the end perhaps? Just a guess
-
mine does this. i quite like it though. sometimes it sticks for a while and then jumps to the current speed
-
Often a sign of needing lubrication.
-
Hehe, mine is exactly the same !! 30 mph can be about 27-33 mph.
I would bother to fix it, but I don't want to remove the speedo cable from the box again, I don't think I'll be as lucky this time round - I know I'll end up dropping the cog.
-
Ha, looks like i aint the only one then
Where can i find the cog? Anyone got diagrams?
As for lubing, what should i use?
Yep feels weird looking at the needle jumping around (in addition to the ever persistent coolant light flashes!)

I had this on my driver, was due to the speedo cable being dried out and dirt ingress due to chunks of the outer slieve being missing. I cleaned it up as best I could and sprayed WD40 down all the gaps. Then I wiped off the excess and taped up the gaps in the cable outser sheithing, after a couple of days the speedo was fixed :)
-
yup flashing coolant light too.
Again, i am quite a fan of that
-
I don't get a flashing coolant light, just bouncy revs and bouncy speedo - but they don't really phase me.
-
only downside to living with bouncy speedo is not being able to tell just how fast you are going through speed cameras
-
Mines only +/- 3mph, so its unlikely I'll make a boo boo.
-
Dont bother greasing it. Replace it as its cheap and easy to do.
The cable will look mint but its probably full of rust
-
DO bother greasing it, its free and it just might work! if not, it aint cost you owt eh ;)
-
Cheers fellas, will wd40 it up on the weekend and see how it goes
-
I'd be inclined to use actual grease, WD40 can be a bit thin, CV/Moly/General Purpose should do the trick.
-
trouble is its getting the grease in there, not like you can split the cable in half and grease it up!
-
I have a plan, convince the missus that cv grease is a new rejuvenating creme and fill the bath with it, then drag the cable through it repeatedly until its full of it?
... Or use something like this (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_188309_langId_-1_categoryId_165705), or lithium bearing spray.

I think the WD40 is a good idea as it might just shift enough crud to stop it sticking, although do agree it may not last for ages. Deff worth a try.
