Title: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 15 December 2008, 19:20
i have a vw scirocco, with a 2.0 8v passat engine which untill now has been using a mk2 golf gti (8v) gearbox....however its foooked!

What other gearbox's are the same fitment? i know they pretty much all fit to the block, but which will have the same input shaft size and spline (so it will fit my clutch)?

Any help will be great, and if anyone has what i need near cambridge let me know!

Cheers
Mark

any  mk2 8valve  020 series box will  fit your clutch.

mk2 16v  and mk3 8 valve boxes have the larger shaft

make sure its a MK2 GTI box though, non-GTI has smaller 90mm driveshaft flanges.  Though you can swap the larger 100mm GTI ones on, this is an extra pain in the arse you could do without I expect
Later cabs and sciroccos have the 100mm shafts as well.

The MK3 2.0 and MK2 16v boxes can be fitted if you put a 16v friction disc on.

or a mk3 friction disk

being a rocco box it may have the larger shaft flanges already :)

rocco one has smaller shafts...and looking at the state of my clutch i think i'm going to change it, was wondering if this would fit? don't know the box codes, don't know if this is cable change, and weather i can convert it to fit my car (will probably need the clutch to match, but while its in bits i think i may aswell do the best i can for it) i think you change change the selector on the car to take cable change one!???

hope that makes sense

i'm pretty sure it can be made to fit with not too much work or money

you need

cabel change selector & cabels

flywheel  228mm
clutch  228mm

seat 16v clutch actuator
seat 16v clutch cable
seat 16v gear box mounting bracket ( ideal )

i'm sure someone will provide partnumbers

then it's just bolt up

Post by: tonsofun on 18 December 2008, 22:00
what is that flywheel and clutch off of? and what 16v seat are the parts off? just so i can price it all up before buying the box!?

cheers

oh and whats the mount for? will the standard rocco ones not fit??

push rod / for mechanical clutch operation/ ABF (02A141728)
on an online parts thing lol

is that what i need? and the clutch cable, clutch and flywheel to match? if so whats the difference in flywheel on this, and my one?

Thanks for all the help Danny_p

couple of other things i forgot,

frount engine mount bracket  ( off anythign cable change )
and starter as cabel change boxes have a diffrent one
you may or may not need dioffrent speedo cable

found something called,
push rod / for mechanical clutch operation/ ABF (02A141728)
on an online parts thing lol

sounds like the right part  i'll have a look back have all the p/n's   somewhere

as for the differance in the flywheel,  it's  competly  diffrent  it's  the traditional type  flywheel bolts to cranck  pressure plate to flywheel and operated by  bearing on lever, rather than the arse about face arangement used on 020 boxes.    the gearbox mounting bracket  holds the clutch cabel on the seat setup you can use a 1.3 cable and weld bits to the normal cable change gearbox mount bracket  but i thought that the oem route would be better as it's off the shelf parts and hasstel free fitting

the mounting brackets bolt upto std mk2 golf mounts  not 100% sure on roccos

chould post some piccys up of the build on my car as it's useing all the seat bits for the cabel change & the engine

pictures would be great if you have them, looks like quite alot of parts...will need to price it all up before buying the box as i dont want to spent too much on it at the moment.

Should be able to get the cable change system bits off a passat, but the flywheel isn't goin to be easy to get, and think new ones will be expensive (unless the passat one is the same? loads of them in scrappy's) also surely the passat starter should fit too (unless the flywheel is diff on the passat and seats)

cheers again

Front engine mount bracket from an 02a car isnt any good, wont fit a rocco.  However I think the oem one will fit, but thats not the main issue! There are no oem gearbox brackets available that will allow you to mount a cable shift box into a MK1 based car.  There are custom parts around but aint cheap:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK1-Golf-Jetta-Scirocco-O2A-Gearbox-Conversion-Mounts_W0QQitemZ130170928509

Speedo cable you need a MK1 1.0-1.3 one, and same with clutch cable I think?  There was someone saying about a random vaux cable that works iirc, I'll try to dig out the info.

then will just have to cut and weld the mounts

but mk3 box deffo easyer to fit

aye if you handy with a welder could make your own, you have an idea over what needs to be done from the ebay linky.  just make sure the welds are good or Bad Things will happen
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 19 December 2008, 13:23
mk3 easier to fit? will i just need the friction plate to match for that one? or is it cable change too? the casing looks the same so rocco mounts should fit?

cheers
Title: Re: Gearbox Question

MK3 GTI 8v is a rod shift box, same as what you have now. just need 16v/mk3 GTI 8v friction disc as the input shaft is bigger.

edit: 1 thing to check though, is that it has the studs on the diff housing for the MK1 rear gearbox mount bracket, some of the later boxes dont have them.  IIRC the holes will be there, but no studs :)
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 19 December 2008, 14:55
wicked just reserved that one, not too worried about the studs, think i fitted one before and just used 3 bolts in the threaded holes instead of studs and nuts.

Cheers for all your help everyone, hopefully no more complications (i guess this gearbox will take the larger driveshafts?)
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: rubjonny on 19 December 2008, 15:00
yeah that'll work too :)
if its not been messed with it will have 100mm flanges on aye!

Post by: tonsofun on 15 January 2009, 17:05
managed to get the mk3 8v box, just tried to get a clutch for it and all the suppliers are having a fit because i dont have the reg...typical! what exactly do i need for this, is it just the friction plate and use the old pressure plate and/or flywheel, or do i need the lot? would like to get a kit ie. pressure plate and friction plate as i know there both new then, anyone know which i need, even a reg number of a car listed with this (would save the suppliers scratching their heads this way)

Cheers

Title: Re: Gearbox Question

if I were you I would buy a sachs MK2 16v clutch kit from here:
http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=728

comes with everything you need, new pressure plate bolts, clutch spline grease etc and will work with the 8v MK3 GTI box + a MK2 8v/16v GTI 210mm flywheel :)

edit: only thing I would advise is you get the gearbox code off the flat plate on the bottom of the bellhousing to confirm it actually is a MK3 GTI box :)
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 15 January 2009, 17:18
thanks for that, my local place has got a mk3 one in stock, and i could do with doing it asap, will this fit, just looked at the mk3 sachs kit and it list a different pressure plate, does this mean the flywheels are different? will it still bolt to a mk2 flywheel??

cheers
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: rubjonny on 15 January 2009, 17:44
yes the later MK3 pressureplate & flywheels are different, so they wont work with a MK2 fly!  The later MK3 item is heavier and uses a single roll pin for alignment, MK2 uses 2 rollpins.
I'd go with a MK2 16v kit, but if you can source a later MK3 flywheel then it should be all good.

ok, they are going to hate me....will any mk2 16v kit work? (thats presuming there are options, which there always are when i ask) if so i'll phone tomoz and get one it its in stock, if not i'll order the sachs one!
Cheers for all your help btw, dont know what i'd do without this site and you guys!

Cheers Again

all MK2 16v kits are the same :)
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 16 January 2009, 18:24
i have a problem, i bought a mk2 16v clutch kit today (a sachs one) fitted it all, and when i came to fit the gearbox it wont fit, the splines are wrong on the input shaft...just double checked, and my old (mk2 8v) clutch actually fits this gearbox...so i looked on sachs website, and found out that my new clutch is 28 splinned 210mm, and so are ALL mk3 gti's....like you said! Does this mean this isn'e a mk3 gti box?? its cold dark and wet, and i think all of it was for nothing as i bought the wrong gearbox!!!!!!!!

cheers
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: danny_p on 17 January 2009, 10:22
means it's not a mk3 box then     what code is it ?
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: tonsofun on 18 January 2009, 10:29
its got AUG on it, which from what i can find out its a mk2 8v box....which isn't a juge problem, coz i can just get an 8v clutch...except i've already bought and fitted the 16v one, and probably cant get my money back on it!!! :(

Cheers for all your help...Hopefully after the new clutch, it'll all go well!!
Title: Re: Gearbox Question
Post by: rubjonny on 19 January 2009, 15:01
yeah AUG is mk2 8v, just buy another sachs 8v clutch kit, swap the friction disc over then pack all the 8v bits and the 16v friction disc into the 16v box, return it, job done
the 8v and 16v sachs kits have the same parts in the only difference is the friction disc itslef, jus just clean it up nice so it looks unused then take it back :)
