my hand brake mecanism in the calipers are worn and not meeting mot syandards on rollers. but when i fit new callipers i lose my pedal. then if i fit old calipers again i get a pedal back. can anyone help?
-
what calipers are you fitting? and have you blead them properly?
-
they are delphi lockheads. ive tried gravity bleeding them and pressure bleeding them.
-
not being funny here, but there are two types. you might have yours on upside down, try swapping the new ones around.
-
Try turning the caliper so the nipple is at the top Because air gets trapped above the nipple worked for me anyway

i fitted them the same way as the old ones which work when i put them back on. i will try them the other way though.
-
Sounds like an air lock, do you get any feel at all with the new calipers? Spongey or nothing at all?
-
yeah i seem to remember people retro fitting mk3 calipers and having the same problem. they look the same so you would assume they go on the same but as they are off a later model and a later design they actually fit the opposite way round.

yeh it does seem like an air lock. i get a pedal if i pump it but then drops to floor after about a minute

when you was getting the air lock was you using a pressure bleeder?
-
Best way to bleed it is by hand with someone sat pressig the pedal for you, i've got a pressure bleeder and its a load of toss.

ok we used to have the same problem with our racing sidecar
we used to hang the calipers high to get the air up , and hold the piston right back , and try tapping the caliper to get the air bubbles to move if they are stuck to hthe inside of the caliper
-
Take the caliper off the carrier wind the piston back put a piece of wood in to stop the piston coming out turn the caliper so the nipple is at the top and bleed as normal it was the same on mine you could pump up the pedel but then it would go the the floor

The problem is if you fit MK3 calipers to a pre 88 MK2, the earlier calipers have the handbrake mech on the toip rather than underneath, hence when you fit the MK3 calipers with the handbrake mech in the right spot the bleed nipple is on the bottom :)
If you have a post 88 MK2 the MK3 calipers are a direct swap.

^^^ knew it was something like that. :)

i still cant get a pedal. i dont understand what is wrong. has anyone got a set of second hand rear callipers i can buy that will fit a 1988 8v? as this seems 2b my last option at the moment :undecided:

have you wedged the brake valve open ??
are you getting fluid out ??
