Title: Went to look at a mk4 Gti
Post by: Mr_Orange on 15 May 2009, 08:58
Viewed a mk4 GTi yesterday ('99 plate).  Low mileage (72k).  Clean inside and out.  1 owner.  Not sure if the belts been done?

FSH.  Flicked through some receipts:  Some mention of work due to water loss, re-tapped spark plug threads (!), repair to water leak from roof...

Fired it up with a cough of smoke (leaving black soot mark on floor), fumes were rich and with a poke of the pedal some white smoke.  Also idling a little rough from cold.  Didn't run it for too long as that kinda put me off!   :undecided:

Stay well clear of this one or typical cold-start stuff?

What engine was it?

Sounds a little dodgy to me. If in doubt, look elsewhere. its the only way you'll get piece of mind.

2.0 GTi

Was it cold, has it been ragged, is it a common / simple sensor fault etc?...  just put me off you know.

Been told it was used this week so not like it's been stood around for ages.

Next!

There are enough of them out there to walk away and find one that runs fine. I've seen far too many 2.0s with running issues that never get fully resolved. Any particular reason you want a 2.0 over the 1.8T ?

I deffo would leave the 2.0 and go for the 1.8T, personal opinion but ive had both and 1.8T weighed up the best by far...

Aye, it has put me off going back.

TBH, the sort of money I'm looking at spending (and in terms of running / maintenance costs) the Turbos available are showing higher miles than I'd have confidence in.

Give me time, I'll start with the GTi and move on up when I know a bit more about them!

In terms of running costs, the 2.0 seems to drink more petrol than the 1.8T, and most of them seem to like drinking oil also! Mileage is always a tricky one. A poorly maintained (or even just following the vw recommended service schedule) low miler might not be as good as an enthusiast maintained high miler. At 130k mine was running sweet as a nut when i sold it (albeit with a slipping clutch) as I did all the servicing myself every 5k miles!

Being an ex 2.0 owner Toph is right. The 2.0 will use more petrol as you need to put you foot down so much more to get anywhere. Its MASSIVELY underpowered. It also drinks oil like there no tomorrow, imo the 2.0 is a false economy and id highly suggest you opt for the 1.8T.

If its a GTI your after dont bother with the 2.0, 115BHP in the nicest possible way is pathetic. If you want a nice motor with all the GTI spec and a smaller insurance bill then get the 2.0. (FYI the 2.0 isnt called a GTI in Europe, its called a Highline and is only a GTI in the UK to get more sales)

Problem is I'm looking to trade in, I got to go with what I know and can see on the forecourt.

If I see a nice well maintained Turbo I'd go for it, but what I'm seeing available is lots of 5dr GTis, higher mileage 3drs and very high mileage Turbos.

Rock and a hard place.  Wish me luck!

What are you tradeing in and where abouts in Kent are you? Do you have to trade in? You can EASILY pick up a Turbo via AutoTrader.

Autotrader's where I'm basing my search.
Live Canterbury way and willing to travel Essex / Middlesex perhaps but certainly no further than that!
Trading in a Saxo VTR (time for something a bit more grown up and to suit my motorway commute).  I have some interest privately and will see what happens there, but its looking simplest for me to just trade it in if I got to travel for one.  If I don't I'll potentially either have no car or two cars.

How much you looking at spending then mate?

3k tops inc my trade in.  Limiting me somewhat!  If I could spank another grand at it then I'd have no problems.

In the same boat as you, you get fed up of veiwing cars which are advertised as imaculate, mint etc etc

Keep looking mate, i bought one and to be honest knew it needed minor work and £1000 later it was mint but if you got your heart set on a minter keep looking but dont rule out the good deals to be had for little touch ups

Or you could save some more money mate and get the one you want.

Was a bit worried there when I mentioned the Saxo...  it all went a bit quiet!   :lipsrsealed:

Got some more motors to look at tomorrow.  Couple of mk4s up in Essex, one in Tunbridge Wells.

Or you could save some more money mate and get the one you want.
Or keep dipping into our (if sh!t gets real bad) savings!  I'll soon have to re-tax the VTR and no doubt have to spend out on the next thing to go wrong with it.  No expense spared with that thing, but the "love" affair ended getting it through last MOT.

At least you have seen the light. I cant express enough how much you should get the 1.8T, I wish I had someone like me to have told me that before I got my 2.0. I loved it to bits and was a great year stop gap between the MK5 but was just so gutless :(

Saxo is sold.  Hoorah!

Now to unleash my full potential at car shopping.  Well, me, the internet and a mobile phone.

Hopefully off to see one next wknd and will also try to get up to Essex for a couple there.  Must remember 50mph on the crossing, 50mph on the crossing, 50mph...

If I were you I'd travel nationwide....

IMO there is no need to travel nationwide, there are plenty about. Especially in the Kent / London / Surrey / Essex part of the UK.

Because people have been driving them and driving them in the hope of a journey where they don't break down

They aren't all high mileage. There are loads with less mileage. Priced between £4500 and £5000 there plenty with less than 80k

a lot of MKIV's were company cars so you'll find a few with high miles

plenty out there though with average miles for the right price - just got to keep looking

took me nearly 3 months of searching to find mine

I found the same problem when looking for mine - loads of high mile turbo's. Nearly brought a 2.0! but glad I didn't as I would of regretted it I think, After about 6 weeks of looking finally found my 2001 1.8T with 53k on.

Job done.

Picked up a cracking 1.8 GTi today.  The drive back was a dream.

Looking forward to some happy motoring and good, like-minded, anecdotal banter on here.

Cheers

Ha,
I succumbed to the "get the turbo" bullying.
I'll get on with photos tomorrow when I've given it a good buffing and worked out a photo-bucket account or what-have you.
