Title: ***My New Lady - Mk2 Golf GTi***
Post by: X4MGS on 12 January 2010, 17:32
Thought I would post some piccy's of the new Lady that has joined my Harem at home...

This is what she looked like when I bought her from Fleabay, from a guy down in Northampton... (Took me ages to find the right one.... There are some really expensive rubbish models about...) Like my Audi S2 I really wanted a box standard one as I don't go for big mods... As I don't have the know how on how to fix 'em if something goes wrong...

I ran her for a couple of weeks and then took her to my Mate who is a VDub Mk2 Fanatic & Mechanic for him to give it the once over and fit a new clutch as it was on its way out...

In his opinion it is one of the best MK2's he had seen in the last 5 years... All original and well looked after... (I have 3 folders full of bills, full service history... all the MOT's etc etc inc all the receipts for every part bought for the car..)

The only thing that let the car down was a roting tailgate, non standard passenger side wing which didn't fit 100% properly, and a couple of touch up jobs on the paint work... So I asked the guys who painted some parts on the S2 to have a look at her and give me some idea of how much a full respray would cost...

We came to a deal and she went in after having the clutch done... The guys suggested getting a proper OEM wing, another tailgate and bonnet to get the car back to 100% original...

The wing came from the stealers £100.00 odd quid!!!, Tailgate and Bonnet came from a VW dealer on ebay... £10.00 for the bonnet & £40.00 for the tailgate... Would have bought OEM but these are NLA...

Dont worry mate, theyre 100x easier (and cheaper!) to fix than an s2 if they do go wrong!

Looks very nice that does

I wasn't sure about putting it back on, but it overs the holes on the grille with it fitted!!

I have gotten used to it and it looks naked without it!!

She has been with Eibach springs & Boge turbo struts, lowers it by 30mm

The pictures only show them fitted to the rears... Fronts have been done since - just haven't taken any pictures.. It sits really well and handles much better...

I have also fitted Eibach rear ARB... Front is getting fitted soon...

Should get a post up for my MK2 really! It's only a 1.3 Ryder, but it's a 5dr Tornado red one with GTi bits, just needs big bumpers and GTi suspension now then it's job done.

My first car, so I couldn't be happier with it. Here's a pic....

Should get some new pics done really, got smoked side repeaters on now (to match the GTi rear lights, worked well too!)

She looks really nice M8...

My son has a 1.6 Driver with GTI bits on too but its not quite as nice as yours, but it looks well with his BBS RA's on it.

What alloys are yours??

I keep looking for some RM's but they are silly money here and they keep popping up on Ebay.de... normally when I'm skint!!

Put up your own thread... Its great to pop back and look at the pics every now & then...

It does amaze me what condition some MK2 Golfs are in considering there age, partly down to careful owners I'm sure but down to the quality of VWs more I suspect.

It has had a lot of work, engine needed a load of work along with other bits when my twin brother first had it standard (as his first car) but it's been well worth it. He ended up paying over £400 to get it through an MOT because we didn't have the heart to have it scrapped. New exhaust from the manifold, new brake parts, new shock absorbers, work on the valves.... most recently rods needed doing for tracking, but I don't mind spending the money on it at all.

Not sure what the wheels are to be honest mate. Cost 180 with nearly brand new tyres on though so were a bit of a bargain. Do like the RMs too, but same, can't afford them and money always goes else where!

Will do

Deffo A Bargain worth that all day long and much more... think they bay be Corrado wheels as they have the curved spokes...

I also think it has to do with the fact that its now seen as an "Iconic" car like UR & M3 E30's etc...

Let me know when you have a thread and I will have a read...

I'm a bit bad for that really, can't understand why people wouldn't want to look at a MK2 Golf in that condition! Drive past people with my Fiancee going "ha, he must be gay?!.... he looked and then looked away??" they are an iconic car and there aren't many better looking cars than these on the road IMO.

Here's a link to mine, same pics but a bit more about me and it's little story! Will post more, and more pics as soon as I can. Might even put a few pics of my brothers MK4 up

Na... Love the grunt of the DTM pipes...

It's not too loud & it does has a lovely BURBLE when you take your foot off the gas....

I'm not going total stock OEM...

Near enough with some tastefull & important upgrades....

Everything can be made a little bit better...

Next upgrade is the lights left on buzzer/warning Relay,

Then its fitting the Electric Mirrors I bought Months ago...

After that its the Mk4 Rear Caliper Brake upgrade With New Bearings & Front brake upgarde...

Not that the fronts have been an issue.. Unlike my Audi S2...

After that it's a timing belt change...

And Then what ever else I can find to do - Any suggestions other than paint the eyebrow????

Spent the last two nights messing with my old girl.... Got fed up fixing other peeps cars - mainly my sons as he has done a big bumper conversion with side trims & replaced his rocker cover gasket etc etc etc....

Rear Turrets now overlaid with the earlier Carpet Covers from a Valver That I'm breaking at the mo... Nothing major I just think they look better & I was upgrading the parcel shelves with better ones so made sense to do it all at once....

Whilst doing this I noted that Stevie Wonder had wired in the Amp - so decided to tidy it up and put it where the OEM Loom is - Under the carpet properly... But then had the notion to do what Mr Blue suggested with hiding the Amp behind the rear Door card... So thought I'll have a bash...

Door Card Off...

She's just back from the Body Shop....

Had the roof painted along with the bumpers and the tailgate handle - all parts that weren't done when the original respray was done - due to the costs & lack of cash...

I've used a different firm this time - But the work look's excellent - Lets see how it lasts!!

Been working on her today....

Fitted the electric mirrors that I've had for over a year....

Whilst I had the doors in bits thought I would also fit brand new window inner scrapers that arrived from Germany last week...

Mirrors were a doddle to wire in (Did have a proper OEM loom & Switch) and if anyone needs any info on how to do it let me know...

Mirrors Fitted!!

Very very very envious of your mk2. I used to have a red 3dr 8v. I dreamed of doing what you have done to yours. Only critism i have is the exhaust, i'd like to see a standard system on it. Good work thought

Just had a little re-read through to get up to date! Still love this car mate.
Is your son's car on here yet?!

I've sinned and sold the Golf now to buy a Polo 6N2 (1.4 16v). Had it almost a year now so if you remember who I am I'll be surprised!

Good to see the Golf is still having little jobs done to keep it as nice as it is. Perfect example of a proper MK2 GTi!

I do remember you & I do remember seeing that you had sold the Golf...

My son started a thread and then some dickhead went down the side of his car with a stanley knife & then slashed 2 tyres..

So he's a bit fed up with it and then to cap it off someone ran into his drivers door last week - Uninsured Driver so no come back and the fuzz don't give a sh!te!....

So he's saving up for a GTI...

Scum bags! Need a good pasting! I still wish I knew who broke into my Golf.

Shame to hear about the police, especially when it's there job to keep those drivers off the road eh!

I'd love a GTi, buying one is one thing, insuring it another! Good for him though! Good two fingered salute to the low life who thinks he's a big man! Cowards wouldn't even think about it if he was sitting in the car!!

Complete Barstewards.... Good Job I didn't get hold of 'em that's for sure...

We priced up insurance and it's not much more for a GTI in his own name as his Driver!! Depends how much he wants one.... Gotta keep working his ass off if its to come a reality....

Does whether it's an 8 or 16v make much difference?

Very Easy to do TBH... Hardest part was figuring out which wires went into the fuse box....

I picked up a Brand New "Old Stock" Set of mirrors (Fecking Expensive Mind!!) a couple of months ago so will be swapping these over, just waiting for the heated drivers glass to arrive that I bought yesterday...

Fitted a new Blue Temp sender today & Reset the ECU.....

Then cleaned some of the bay.... Didn't take any pics...

& Refitted my passenger door card after it had been leaking with all the rain we had last month...

Used half a roll of gaffer tape to make sure the membrane don't leak again....

Also got 2 x brand new door rubbers to fit....

This weekends job me thinks - seen as the weather is going to be nice...

Had her serviced and the timing belt done last week....  :) :) :)

Also Fitted a set of new VW HT Leads... You could feel the difference in quality in the leads :afro:

Had Her MOT'd today and she flew through.... Tester was yet again impressed with just how nice she is...  8)

Just amazing that I've owned her for 3 years and all I've had to spend is 3 years of servicing... She's not cost me a penny other than "What I've Wanted To Buy" Not what has been needed....
