Title: CJA's Golf MK3 GTI 20vt Project.
Post by: CJA321 on 07 May 2012, 20:39
So been on here a while and thought it would be time to start a project thread instead of uploading different threads and clogging shiz up

Bought her for the handsome sum of £300, 121K On the clock, Needed a gearbox, Classic DFQ noisy gearbox. Was a homer the boy didnt want to fix, so guess i thought id see some potential

When i got her
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/Phonephotos2050.jpg)

Decent enough RS6's, but had stupid 225/45/17 tyres on, and standard springs. Apart from that, had near full service history and was bog standard apart from stereo and ipod dock  :smug:

Even had one of the sales receipts for when it swapped hands at 2 years old, was originally a lease car to start with

£10925 Mk3's were worth money at some point then  :smug:

So anyway... when i bought it, the gearbox was already removed, by myself on the homer, even charged him for my time removing it...    so that was a boost. Decided that if the box was out, taking the engine out would be a doddle.

So out she came for a spruce-up, at this point i didn't realise how poor the 8v was  :embarassed:

Sourced a new gearbox and gave it a tidyup

Engine tidyed up, didnt go to town on it, as no leaks etc and gonna sound bad, but couldnt really be bothered at the time

New timing belt etc and the engine and gearbox went back in, didnt get any pics of this unfortunatly

Got a badge-less the grill and stuck it on the road

Pic beside my friends VR at college

Waaaaaaay to high, and feck knows what i was thinking with a white badge and huge tyres    Looked total gash next to mates slammed VR

Got some 205/40/17 tyres and whacked them on, In Inverness there's a seriously dodjey Albanian guy who sells second hand tyres from his "Workshop" So got 2 toyo T1-S's near enough new and two budget tyres for £60 and sold my 225's on for £80

So went and bought some coileys and whacked them on. Hot Tuning bad boys, rides awful but gets rid of the archgap

Also were I was staying when i was at college, the B+B owner turned out to be a total DubNut... Turned out his daughters boyfriend was doing up a MK3 also, but unfortunatly he had died in a motorbike accident before it was finished. So he had loads of stuff he wanted rid of, for nothing.... Even offered money but he wouldnt take it, gave me a set of Goodridge brake hoses and a genuine set of Hela Quads, was delighted!!

All fitted
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/phonephotos2119-1-1-1.jpg)

Then MOT time came around, Car was rotten underneath, Both front jack points, inner sills where the bungs go and both rear and front floors, again were the bungs go

Cant weld very well, so called in a homer and got it all done for £100

Seam sealed and undersealed the whole lot

Things took a slowdown for a while due to work commitments... was in dire need of a new toolbox...

Stupid Snap-On salesman... Got £250 for my old box though, which i still have... More than i paid in the first place

So just did little bits and pieces. Bought a new badge and painted my grill and got direct cold air feed kit

Got a seccond had Magnex backbox off fleabay, and had a straight throughcat back middle pipe made up at local Custom Craft

And just over the year iv owned the car rust had started to seep in even more....

So decided id get a seccond hand tailgate and paint it myself, as paintshop prices around here are stuuuuuupidly high for some reason  :undecided:
Filled and welded a plate in for the wiper, looks okay to me, but far from perfect. And the paint is a slightly differant shade.... Cheers Halfrauds

Then got sick of my wheels, id curbed them loadsa times  Was looking at some differant wheels but couldnt really afford them. So back down to halfrauds... Got 2tins Antracite paint, 2Primers, 2PU Laquer for £35 with my friends staff discount card as im 2nd cardholder!!

Test trying one of them, still wasnt to sure if it would look better or not

Was pritty delighted with the finnish tbh, especially with it being just outa a can!

Time had come time finally do something about my fogs also, Tinting spray was £12 a can??!? Thought nuts to that, went upto MorayTints and got some off cuts of some headlight linting film, just works like a sticker. Got it for nothing and was pritty impressed at it.

Fitted the tyres, Was pooping myself fitting the tyres on with fresh paint and re-painted the calipers and fitted new pads all round

And then thats about as far as iv got for now. Short of re-painting the whole car and an engine conversion theres not alot left to do IMO.

Need a lether interior, if anyone is selling one and willing to ship it up north?  :nerd: :smug:

And then after a good clean today, wheels sealed with Autoglym wheel sealant and T-Cutted and then fully polished

I KNOW i'm going to get hate for that Bra... But i personally quite like it with everything dark on the car

So thats it for now, comment and advice welcome. Haters gonna hate

Love that colour I had an 8v many moons ago the same,is it called dusty mauve? Car looks really clean and at first wasnt keen on the RS6s on a mk3 but soon as youve changed the colour they look really good nice work

Thanks, i love the colour also. Not seen another with it tbh, think because its more a mk4 colour? Its called Blue Anthracite pearl iirc. Looks a differant colour in every light

Yeah centre caps came the wrong colour off ebay. My Bra hides my stonechips

why do people hate them so much?

Soooo bit of an update

Decided to join the 20VT crew

Found an AGU lump i couldn't say no too. 95k, Emisions report, New timing belt, waterpump, guides and tensioners, with bill for £300 to do the work. All for £450

Came with everything for the conversion from the doner car, including bits i dont need and can sell on to recoup some money back

Have gearbox, driveshafts, AC pump, hubs + starter all for sale for next to nothing, so if you want just ask

Seeing as its had a new belt etc, and emissons report was bang on, not going to strip the head atm.

Sat to work, stripped the rest of the engine to bits ready for cleaning and paint, everything is in pritty decent nic, apart from a bit of burnt oil in the rocker, all the cams and tappets look good, no visible wear or any of the lobes worn.

Everything all labled and ready for cleaning
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/678109.jpg)

Only bad thing i found was this.....

Turbo cracked all the way through to the wastegate, so ready for the bin.... But after a grumpy phonecall to the seller he refunded me £50 for the turbo... So cant complain in all fairness.

Pritty much all the parts sourced now, Big thanks to Brad who helped a hell of alot!! New wings and possibly vento front going on at the same time also, then going to paint. Decided to go the whole hog, you only live once

Thanks for the coments. Well id like to go for a differant turbo tbh, its just the ko3 on this lump i think. Was kinda unsure of just bolt on options however.

Gonna have to speed this conversion up a wee bit also as a hole the size of my hand just appeared in my gearbox off my 8v

Thats great brad cheers!

Well gearbox blew up on the 8v side of things, not fussed to be fair as getting replaced anyway

Prepped afew parts

Cleaned up on side of the engine ready to paint, still some more to come off, just used GUNK, stinking stuff!!

Trying to go with a clean more subtle kinda look, not too OTT. Kinda same colour as my wheels, thought it might tie in quite nicly

Big order coming from my local VAG dealer tomorow with all gaskets etc, but wont be able to do anymore for wee while as going afew music festivals

Looking great matey

my new gearbox is built and will be shipped back to me next week, i will have this parts ready for u not long after that mate

Regarding the Turbo manifold crack, you can get the repaired or replaced quite cheep if its the K03 ??

or you could upgrade to K03 S turbo (direct swap and no other mods needed)

Sounds good to me! The turbo is nackered, but can get a ko3 from breaker for 50 inc vat.

If i can go a bigger turbo without any other mods ill go for that. What engine codes is the S off?

Been busy (ish) Was at Rockness festival over last weekend, so didnt get much done. Saw some great music and drank far too much, now have a cold from sleeping in a tent over the weekend, but well worth it!

Anyway, finnished cleaning, on rebuild now.

to

Rocker cover gasket, new thermostat coming tomorow, so will get all that back together tomorow. Means can get manifold etc on, and thats it done for this sideof engine more or less

Gonna go for a ko3 s turbo also, as seems alot less hastle fitting while its out etc. As long as it will run on standard managemant with no other mods?

Ordered all my parts more or less.

Engine going in shortly, once clutch and flywheel's here. Phoned up Jetex and manged to get them to beat the ebay price for the exhaust so a bonus with that!

About it for the moment

Got engine into today, also got my ECU back with remap and imob defeat on it for £100. FXS Remaps, rights his own software and is a master tuner. If anyone is up North I would seriously recommend him, says he's smoothed alot of things low down and says gonna be looking at 190/200 ish figures with around 1.4 bar boost. Will see though, not that doubt him at all.

Also got my exhaust, bought direct from jetex and got them to beat ebay price. Ordered Monday, Arrieved Tuesday all the way up here and free delivery!!!

Have my Magnex 8v backbox + custom mid pipe that deletes centre box if anyone is interested, photos in classifieds under exhaust

subframe, rack etc re-furbished

Couple shots of it going in

Not gonna lie, im nackered.... Snapped my slave cylinder clutch pipe, being rough when i was tired.. Bloody stupid haha!

Hope can just get a double ended female flexi and make up my own.

Even being tired, looking from this :-

To this... Keeps me going haha!

Couple days off, and back to it. Need to order up my front mount intercooler and a heap of pipes, wiring getting sent away because i just KNOW id piss that up, and then spend ages chasing around wires etc.
Hubs, driveshafts etc to go on, need to order an alternator + starter motor too.

Getting there though

Thanks for all the comments guys

Got my custom downpipe and my 2.5" Jetex exhaust fitted

As said before, broke my clutch pipe being a tool, wanted £80 from the stealers, made myself one up outa double ended female flexi for £10 and some brake pipe from work. Have no idea if this will work yet, functionally it should, unsure if it will leak or what the pedal will be like though as noticed the pipe on the standard one is slightly thicker, will have to see

Got my looms sent away, didnt want to mess around with wiring. Once there in, induction + cooling systems and then should be *Fingers Crossed* all systems go. Sure there will be teething problems, but it wouldnt be fun without  :lipsrsealed:

Long time since last update, been abroad and took sometime off bloody cars and enjoyed some sun!!

Been busy since been back though!!

Should work a treat mate.. Where you get double ended female ?? peddle should feel no different as the feel is in the cylinders..

Got the flexi from local trade parts place called dingbro, was a delphi hose. Probably have the box and part number somwere if you need it.

Good work so far mate, how long do you reckon before this is back on the road?

Hopefully in about 2/3 weeks. Hopefully less haha!!

So, got the FMIC  fitted, made up some brackets from some old gate brackets

Plumbed the whole lot in, new vacuum pipes and new silicon TIP, aloy hard charge pipes and silicone hoses from ASH.COM
Few bits need adjusted, But pritty happy with result so far
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/20120820_200338.jpg)

Might get some stick for going blue, but i think it works pritty well tbh.

Got all this stuff in, pritty chuffed tbh

Went to start it the other day, starts and runs!!!!!!! Delighted!!! Only problem, was idling for 2/3 secs then dying... Checked all earths, sensors, plugs, fuses. But looked to me to be an imobiliser fault, which is pritty annoying seeing as the ECU was supposed to be unlocked.... Borrowed the scanner from work to have a look

Other faults are from me messing around with plugs and all cleared fine. Bit annoying iv now gotta send ECU away again... Gonna get the imob chip removed completally rather than just reflashed.

Should get it back next week, then just need to touch up afew bit in the bay and then get the interior back together, new wings and sort out the hoses for the servo then put it to paintshop. Also some new clips for the hoses

Whats people experiance with after market body panels? Not sure what to go for

Post by: CJA321 on 09 September 2012, 22:36
okay so been busy busy finnishing this off now. Had a list as long my arm of small niggles etc that needed sorted

Was having a problem getting coolant to circulate properly, found my pipes for heater matrix were kinked where whoever removed the engine had put clamps on the hoses and had stayed on the hoses too long making them mis shaped.

Also the long metal coolant pipe that gos around the block sprung a pin hole leak... VW wanted £120 for the pipe!!! Trip to scrapyard and got new matrix pipes, the metal pipe and loadsa other crap for £15 off a sorry looking A3

Pipe didnt look much better than mine, smothered it in chemical metal as its hidden by the manifold plumbed it all in and coolant now circulating perfectly

Was frustrating taking it all to bits again however....

Battery wasnt charging, pritty easy fix. Found a broken wire in the harness to the battery

Speedo's not working, swapped in a new sensor now alll good

Fan wasn't cutting in, found a mangled pin in the plug so again not too bad.

Second hand ABF starter i got from Bay advertised as in perfect working condition was noisey from the very first time i turned it over... Died a death yesterday and started crunching etc also...

Took it to bits
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/20120908_181850.jpg)

Maybe not too clear but in middle is one of the magnets that sits on the inside of the casing, had decided it didnt like it there anymore and was rumbling around in the rotor. Cleaned out the solenoid on the starter and freed it off, then got the 20vt starter and robbed bits off that. Luckily the casing is the same size/dimensions/no. of magnets. So built a decent starter thats not noisey at all now outa two of them

New wing

Had no dash lights at all, milage and MFA were working, but as soon as you turned ign on whole lot turned off and didnt want to work. Checked all my engine earths etc, all okay. Found that pins 3 + 5 are earths for the clocks to the fuseboard, for some reason they had become disturbed somehow. Pulled the wires out of the chocolate blocks that go to fusebox and earthed the wires to the steering column. All good, clocks working a treat

Flushed the oil, new filter and decent oil and new fuel filter also

Last problem iv got, maybe someone could shine some light on it if possibly?  The N75 valve is noisey, after about 30 sec idling starts chapping and sounds almost tappety. Gets steadily louder and faster. Give it a bit of throttle then it goes away but comes back again after 20/30secs.

Video
http://s1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/?action=view&current=20120907_191404.mp4

There is a fault for N75 last time i checked codes, but i assumed that was just due to unplugging etc when had imob fault. Boost pipes are on the correct way, and iv tried another N75 with the same part no. and end code letter C on both of them but both seem to do the same thing. Any ideas would be great cheers

No rust, and solid underneath. Hopefully keep it that way for a bit!!

Power steering pipe burst today though, was a risk as new they looked bad when had engine out. But hey-ho, nevermid....

Thats the old ones, VW wanted as near £400 for them both... So gonna take them to local hydraulic place and see if can cut the rot out and make me a high pressure pipe with hose and the old connectors!

Cars booked into paint this friday, getting full re-spray. Pritty giddy about it, not gonna lie haha!!!!

Yeah says above the pic that its not centre, once id taken off the bumper found that its had a front end bump at some point and the slam panel is  bent over on the lefthand side very slightly so not everything fits in square, not that fussed though tbh as at time just wanted it together haha!!

small update for today. Needed a new radiator, was pishing out and had left it to long.

So got stuck in.

Found a rubbed hose so replaced that and adjusted so wouldnt rub again
(http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k530/CJA321/20121103_135207.jpg)

Was annoying me that my intercooler wasnt centre because the slam pannel was bent, needed a bashing with a hammer and got it sorted and centred. Also painted it black, looks alot less noticable and better too imo. Goes well with sleeper look too.

Then got some side vents from scrappy, finnishes off front quite well.

Also treated it to some new bosch platinum plugs and cleaned the bay.  :-P

Test fitted some rear spacers today. I know i need 3mm fronts so thats sorted.

Need opinions on the rears before i go splash out on some hubcentric ones. Want the wheels to sit near flush with the arch.

These are 10mm

Before on NSR

After with 10mm spacer at OSR

Sorry for poor pics, spacers were borrowed and was in a rush. 10mm okay? Or go for a 15mm?

10mm seemed pritty flush, wheels arnt my strongpoint so any input is appreciated

Long overdue an update...

Car broke down last month at some point. Was doing some crazy electrical problems... Turned out rhe ecu had got damp and was causing it to not run. Got it repaired and all good.

During this time, car was broken into parked outside work and inside was ripped apart. Bit of a downer...

Got a full highline leather interior in now though. And they have prints of the guys who did it, so pritty possitive.

Interior pic

Waiting on some hubcentric wheel spacers and gonna lower it some more.

Got a k03s turbo on order too. After thats fitted its onto the rollers and a stage 2 map

Fooking love that pug haha... Can honestly run it on anything diesel related... stuff you pull out of modern diesels being too watery or contaminated with petrol, obviously not too badly contaminated though.. No wires, just mechanical

Bosch is the good on mate. Lucas is the give or take one.

Just been pouring neat veg when it's on offer in the MK4 and used stuff run through filters. Mate just gets used veg, pours it through a microfibre then straight into his MK3 1.9TD and it runs fine. Turns over a few times then starts unlike firing into life but the Mk4 has been good in the minus. Just totally flat til warm and does lose a bit of performance.

I do yeah. Maybe chuck a load in when theres about a litre of diesel in. I think I put half a tank of veg in then put a tenner of diesel in it as I went on a motorway journey and the overtaking power is even more lacking.

Not checked this in a while, sorry Screech! Prolly closer 200 ish i think, will have to see what rollers say

Been busy with afew other mods, got a really good set of coilovers on a car im breaking, so refurbed them and bunged them on

How she now sits at the back

Still needing to get around to buying some spacers for the rear  :lipsrsealed:

Sitting quite a bit lower now, which i can afford to do with slightly better coilovers, still feel every bump in the road though!!

Then refitted my boost gauge that got ripped out by thieves

All credit for this idea goes to RCSAMMY, using this on his diesel mk3, Yup, i copied you! Seems by far the coolest way and pritty practical way of fitting a boost gauge to a mk3, so thanks for your awesome idea
