Title: Isn’t it interesting.....
Post by: P6GTD on 13 January 2021, 18:11
I am the happy owner of a Mk 7.5 Performance and can’t envisage changing to a Mk8 at all.

However , I thoroughly enjoy reading the Mk8 forum and feel the GTI forum buzz in the same way as I did when I first joined the Mk7, then 7.5 forum.

What has been interesting and maybe different this time is the presence of BMW 1 series debate. Perhaps it’s a tribute to VW that BMW has tried so hard to recreate the GTI vibe with their own products.

Anyway, despite intending to hang on to my 7.5 for a long time, I still check the Mk8 forum before the Mk7 one. So keep up the debates and new car buzz please.

The point of this post? None really other than the usual regular posters seem a nice bunch and always worth reading.

Likewise . The Mk7 forum has slowed down considerably over the last few months and although there's a greater chance of intelligent life being discovered in government than my opening my wallet anytime soon for another car, I do like to read car related musings.

More to come I'm sure. Lots of people have got mk8 orders in and also expect a raft of 128ti opinions to arrive fairly soon. GRY chat seems to have gone quiet but i expect that will bubble back up soon.

Next will be chat about the new i30n...

All good stuff considering most of us are sat at home bored to tears. I enjoy my time i spend here with everyone.

I have nothing Mk7 to speak about anymore so I love this place. Tell you what though, I got in my R on the way home from work today and just thought why bother changing ever again. Flaming brilliant.

Going back a few months, the Mk8 GTi was an abomination and nobody was buying one. Then familiarity set in, emotions calmed down (a bit) and all of a sudden we have a lively and active Mk8 forum with lots of helpful contributions and friendly banter. We have some new members offering valuable insight, and have even welcomed back Exonian after a short jaunt on the dark side.

I've no plans to upgrade my Mk7.5 to a Mk8 any time soon, but I do still read this forum every day.

This is the first- and as yet only- forum I have joined. Gotta agree with the general sentiment- an excellent forum. It does enhance your enjoyment of ownership learning from others’ experience- and in fact comparing different cars.
As for the mk8- Exonian posted recently that mks 5,6,7,8 all as good as each other. He should know, he’s owned a few. And if the mk8 is anywhere near as good as my 7.5, it must be a great car.

I like this little piece by Chris harris- I know it’s a mk7- but it sums up the golf gti’s place in the “ hot hatch story”!-

And there are also those members who no longer have a Golf who still contribute to forum discussions such as Jim_mk7.5 and myself.

I’ve not owned a Golf since 2016 but I still pop in most days - mostly the mk7 and mk8 forum boards, but also occasionally other forum boards too.

I likewise have no intention of getting a MK 8, but love to engage with like minded folks who don't mind a bit of banter and have valuable experience to impart to the less knowledgeable.

Long may it continue

Same here, I keep coming back. Ive flirted with Audi’s and BM’s and a Range in my break from VW but its the Golf that lights my fire. Its nice being back on a forum talking about them.
Now, about that Mk8

Good thread.

I'm enjoying checking in on here, Mk8 is growing (slowly) on me, apart from the Richmonds!

I genuinely feel I could sway back to a Golf again next year but that would probably be if I finally opt-out of having a company car.

I was on these forums back in 2013 when the MK7 first appeared and people were ordering them. The 1 series was very much in the conversation then too! A few members were debating MK7 GTI versus BMW 135i and I remember a few went Bmw due to the horrendous waiting times for the Golf.

I'm glad you feel that way Jim. I wondered if I should have gone for something like the 330e but if you're even considering coming back to the hot hatch then I think I've made the right choice with the Clubsport.
I've always had saloons from my Impreza STI to my A7 and wondered if I should go back that way...just because...no real reason.
I love my mk7.5 GTI so can only imagine how much more I'll love the new Clubsport!!
We are still pre kids so no need for anything bigger anytime soon! I'm sure the golf will do for the first one anyway

Hmmm...

My wife had her 218i M Sport delivered at the weekend. Yes, even car dealers can only offer a delivery service at the moment

The dynamic lights appear to work better on the BMW than my Mk7.5. Also, love the way the BMW cruise control uses the traffic sign recognition camera and offers to set that speed e.g. as soon as you leave a 30 just press set and the car automatically goes to 60.

I know the Mk8 has better lights, better cruise control, better adjustable suspension, head-up-display, and it is available in Reflex Silver... not sure that justifies changing. The GTI Clubsport does tempt me, but I find in the real world my Mk7.5 is more than fast enough.

Hope I can resist temptation and hang on for the Mk8.5.  :undecided:

I've had my 7.5 for just over a year so I won't be getting an 8 any time soon, but I still like to keep an eye on this forum for any news and developments.

I'll be most interested in how VW will facelift the Golf in a couple of years' time, if they take in the criticism over the styling and the infotainment system they may well earn my money.

Thank you....that’s what I intended. I sometimes feel the GTI forum gets a wee bit intensive and I like to remind myself I am so lucky being able to run a GTI of any kind.
I have never driven a more admired car than my string of GTIs. Or ever driven anything better.

I agree. Better in the flesh but only from some angles.
I think the genius of the 7 / 7.5 is that it looked great from every angle. Not a flabby bit in sight.
But I have no doubt the 8 is a great car ......at least the performance models.
I saw a grey 8 GTD at my local dealer the other day and was v impressed by the look.
Mind you, I have always thought the 7/ 7.5 GTD was exceptionally handsome in a tastefully understated way.

After around seven years of owning a mk7 (or two) I still find myself just staring and taking in the styling whenever I see one. The balance of everything is just so right.

Surely you aren't thinking of changing again after only 10 miles? And I do call you Surely...

No, just from a perspective of seeing a mk7(.5) GTI, GTD, R and admiring the lines and how it sits on the road, the same as if I saw a tidy mk5 GTI or mk2 big bumper or a Campaign mk1. Classic Golfs that just look *right*
It’s a very personal thing too as there actually are very very few cars that have that effect on me and it’s far from a case of rose tinted specs.
I quite like cars that have the proportions of a roller-skate (205 GTI 1.9 a perfect example of that) or BMX bike (maybe that’s why I like Reifnitz alloys as they remind me of Skyway Tuffs from my youth), compact but chunky and slightly squared off.
Back in 1983, before all my hopes and dreams were dashed by adulthood, a neighbour traded his immaculate and incredibly handsome mk1 Fiesta XR2 for a Golf GTI Campaign. That latter car fired up my teenage interest in cars and I never tired of looking at it.
Same for another neighbour many years later who had a MINI Cooper 2012 London Olympics special edition (R56) which came with the 17” Conical wheels. Aside from the questionable graphics that was an almost perfectly proportioned car to my eyes and I’d admire the lines every day.

Ah, I put your reply to jv and the MK7 one together and came up with 5! I thought it extremely unlikely but......

I think the test of a classic auto design is perhaps how a car looks in its basic forms.
The Mk7 looked good even at entry level versions.
Applying the same test to the basic Mk8 tells me it is not the equal of the Mk7.
Yes, applying the performance enhancements make the Mk8 look pretty good. But  I suspect if you looked at the “in the clay” design models, the Mk7 takes the prize.

^^^
to which I'd add " does it still look fresh 10 years down the line"
If you look at a lower model mk7 it's a damn good looking car.
I don;t think the mk8 is too far behind. It's still a good looking car.
What would people say about you if your older brother looked like brad Pitt?

@exonian. Yes, the 205 is a design classic. Still looks a great shape today. It's also a classic "package"- spacious inside, small outside, wheel at each corner, proper boot. They don't make 'em like that any more!
