MOT doesn't check if it's nicked or not. Who says the MOT is not dodgy?

if them plates dont belong to that car, im doing a hpi check from that reg, and it isent even this car
if it was nicked surely he wouldent of been able to register it and get a new log book in his name from the dvla, of course we are talkin about the plates but still dont know if they match

Well do the HPI... And when you get the V5, check the chassis/vin numbers to make sure they match.

That's what I would do.

Do a HPI check now, the "classic" one should be enough. Then go outside and check the car's VIN number. DOUBLE CHECK underneath it, have a feel around and a good visual inspection to make sure it's not been welded on or tampered.

The engine number should be on the cambelt cover, it's on the driver's side of the engine. Should be a sticker.

The chassis number should be in a number of places.
a- on the top front of the passenger side dash, which can be seen from looking into the car,
b- look in the spare wheel well and theres likely to be a data sticker.
