Log book and car tax
« on: 30 September 2021, 14:21 »
I have received my vehicle log book and it has an additional note saying it’s subject to additional rate of VED as list price of vehicle has exceeded £40,000.00???
My invoice list price is £39,975.00 before discount. Anyone else come across this on their log book??
Something wrong me thinks!

Whether a car falls into the luxury VED rate for years 2-6 is based on the car’s list price (excluding the first registration fee and the cost of the first year’s VED) at the time the car is first registered, not the list price on the day you ordered the car.

There’s been a recent price increase, so if your car’s new list price (ex 1st reg fee and 1st year’s VED) was over £40k on the day it was registered, you’ll be liable for the additional luxury VED for the five years from when the 2nd year’s VED is due.

Latest mk8 Golf spec and price list brochure is effective 24/09/21, so if your car was registered on or after that date, those prices will be used to determine whether or not your car falls into the luxury VED band.

If your car was registered before 24/09/21 and the list price - ex first reg fee and first year’s VED - was less than £40k (your invoice figure suggests that is the case), then you shouldn’t be liable for the additional luxury VED. In your position, I’d be checking with the dealer to establish the date your car was registered, and if it was before 24/09/21 IMHO you shouldn’t have to pay the additional VED.

Please update the forum with the outcome, once you’ve spoken to your dealer.

If that doesn’t work out, read reply number 295:

https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=287670.msg2643762#msg2643762

And the run up to it.

Good luck, it’s bad that you can spec a car specifically to be below the £40k threshold and the list price goes up and pushes you over. Really the £40k threshold set by the government should go up every year by either inflation or average car price increase.
