Title: Is this a scam?
Post by: N13SCB on 20 January 2010, 17:55
Hi,

Recently I have been messed about buying a 1.8T golf, I was interested in this but I feel its a scam? Il just copy and paste my stories from another forum...

Without going into too much detail about the advert, the car is a golf 25th anniversary...6spd box, 1.8T, FSH so on so on....

Anyway, the car is at a very very cheap price for what it is but the guys "excuse" for this is that the car was left too him in a will, he doesnt even have a drivers licence and doesnt know anything about cars at all.

He is telling me that I cant view the car, its getting delivered to me as its far from home, he does seem to have came up with a good financial deal to cover this but although he now has my phone number he has never contacted me or gave me his, all of this has been done via e-mail with almost day long gaps between mail.

Up to this point it could be genuine but he gave me a registration number that is not being recognised on any hpi or insurance checks

I have asked today if this may have been a mistake but im still waiting on an email or phonecall...

Here is a pic of the car, he has more on his ad but this is the best, the problem you cant see the plate...
The number plate he told me was YG52 UDW

Any advice would be appreciated

This was my next post that I put on today...

Today there has been another development,

The story I havent went into so far is that this guy that has been left the car by his uncle actually lives in miami, so the car is it docks in manchester?

He has told me from the start that ebay motors will be dealing with the transaction, this will involve: me paying a deposit to ebay that doesnt reach the seller until I have the car at my shipping address. When it arrives at me I have ten days in which to decide if I am happy with the car, if i am i pay the balance and the money gets to him. If im not, the car goes back and i get back my deposit.

Anyway, today I have recieved an email from ebay giving me the details of what to do, and it turns out that everything seems to check out ok and after going into further detail I have found that I will actually be paying money to my local post office and they will hold it until the whole car sale has been completed

The only thing, he has sent me another pic of the car (It says on his ad that the polished wheels are not included).

This reg still doesnt link me to a car though, I done another hpi check and it came back no dvla or police record? Does anyone know how this could happen?

Thanks again, and thanks for reading all this

What do you think?

Stu.

If you aint happy or think something's up, don't do it!!!  Plenty more fish in the sea.

Things that seem too good to be true often are just that....

could be in trade, meaning the plate isnt registered to anyone so it would'nt bring up any details when you look it up. Check the tax aswel because he wouldnt get any tax notifications on when it will run out.

I had this problem with my clio as my dads in the car trade and we just forgot to put it in my name lol so every time the rozzers pulled me they told me my car doesnt exist but after checking it was MOT'd and Insured they always just sent me on my way

If the dvla have no records of that plate then it maybe stolen with fake plate, always see the motor before handing any money over, including the V5 form, no V5 no car.

it could be that the car had a private plate and changed back as it takes a while for it to update

Looking at this though i would say scam

If this car is coming from his uncles in Mami,  surely it wouldn't have a UK registration?!

Unless you have a very long barge pole, don't touch it, the fact you cannot view the car is reason enough to avoid it.

Is it me, or does the plate not look right? Something about that number 5...?

How cheap is very cheap out of interest?

Seriously, walk away from this one. I know you want to believe that it's real, but it's not. You will somehow lose your money. It's really, really not worth it.

Best thing to do is forward all the info onto the police.

Hehe - Can't believe you have to ask!!  :P

That plate is on the insurance database, but that reg doesn't even belong to a VW! ;)

Anyone find it strange the wheels are black one side & silver on the other side of the car??

Also darker wheeled one has standard mirrors and silver wheeled one has stubby ones? Could be different car..

I would walk away from the comment of you cant see the car, something very off there

The mirrors and wheels being different on pics mean nothing to me, we often change wheel colour, mirrors, bumpers, number plates etc
On this forum alone how many people have changed there wheel colour but still have pics of the old ones.

The seller may only be using pics from different months to sell the car, i agree not very good idea but he may be

personally, I'd have some fun with it.  Tell him you have friends local to manchester docks that can view the car.  Whatever he says come up with a quip that gets round his hurdles.  You'll soon find out if he's genuine (not that I think he is).

also, there looks to be seat covers or something white on all the seats including the rear headrests but nothing on the other pic.

It is hard to read but I am sure the reg on the 1st pic is different.

Smells like one of these "nigerian" scams to me... I highly doubt the original email you got "from Ebay" was actually from ebay, there are some good fake ones out there, including bank and building society clones - never click on a link in an email!

They ask you to pay a deposit into a holding account, what happens is you pay this and then they take the money and keep the car (that never existed in the first place).

It is a scam, avoid at all costs and buy from a normal seller!

sounds like a very very dodgy deal

everytime i have sold a car, i always get weird emails through auto trader or ebay ,where by 'docks and shipping ' seem to come into the equation!

I would stay well well clear of this! Sounds very weird! The fact that he wont call you, give you his number, or even let you see the car?  :undecided: :undecided: That is not right at all!

Even it is cheap mate, like maybe 2-4 k, its not worth it! The photos dont even match, different wheels, seat appearance, mirrors?

the reg looks like w552 UDW...looks like that cars on a private plate in the first picture, just shows how stupid they think we are by sending a second picture with different alloys and mirrors lol there was one a few months back saying a woman had it and she had moved to italy that was a gti r32 replica though, which i almost fell for i even booked train tickets to pick up the car lol

In your face everyone, I bought it!

Total bargain. Even saved money by using western union to pay the 75% deposit instead of PayPal. Just waiting to hear back from the guy now about when / where I can pick it up
