Auto parking brake when door opened
« on: 26 April 2022, 21:49 »
Hi all, I have found an annoying quirk with my car.

If I go to reverse into a parking place, and I open the door to check the wheel positions relative to the kerb the parking brake comes on.

Is there any way to stop this? I have looked in Carista and I cannot see anything...

It is super annoying trying to reverse and then having to re-release the brake so that the car will move.

I would much rather have a traditional handbrake to be honest, but other than this issue I have been getting on ok with it.

Thanks. :)

Either use the auto dipping mirror to see the kerb on nearside  or keep your door shut when parking.   it’s not a quirk, it’s a safety feature

Unfortunately the kerb is on the driver side relative to where I park. The reversing sensors don't pick the kerb up as it is too low for them to see, but it is high enough to damage my wheels.

I dont know if this is because you have auto hold on??

I dont use auto hold and i reverse onto my drive with the drivers door open every night and it doesnt operate the handbrake??

Wasn't it a thing on the earlier Mk7's.... deleted on later ones?

Like the thing with the inability to move the car without the seatbelt on?

I seem to remember that it’s reversing with the seatbelt unfastened that causes the issue- rather than a door being open. Could be both

Try reversing with your seatbelt on an the door open

Thanks guys I will try with Auto Hold off and with the seatbelt on.

I am pretty sure that my best was on when it happens though.

I can see why it may be a safety feature to stop you leaving the car with the brake off, but you get no such feature in a car with a manual handbrake...

A previous car of mine was a 335i DCT BMW and as soon as you opened the door to reverse it would go from R into Neutral which was also annoying.

Well after a few experiments I found that it only happens with the Auto Hold switched on.

I don't really use it that much so will leave it turned off.

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Odd because I was just going to say that what you've experienced is actually normal setup... I've never had auto-hold on but if I open my door to while reversing to do a final check while going into a tricky parking space at work then the EPB does come on automatically.

I'm sure it's linked to having the engine running and your seatbelt on so as soon as the door is opened it comes on.... maybe it only engages under a certain speed or if you had stopped.
