Title: Project caddy
Post by: tdi_blu on 26 April 2011, 22:01
Me and my dad have always fancied a caddy and been looking around and finally found this little gem which we got between us as a little project and just cause we wanted one really  Its a 2001 x-plate 1 owner from new and apart from a few minor bits its in very good condition. Its the SDi version and although its not the Tdi model it still drives very well and its pretty nippy round town so suits us fine.It needs a couple of wheel bearings,2 tyres needed replacing, naff steel wheels painted black and the odd spot of rust and thats it really.Things we have replaced on it since we got it are as follows

New set of wheels G60 steels with good tyres all round
Binned the front seats and replaced them with some Seat Gti 16v items bought for £30 bargain
Mk4 Golf Gear knob and Gator.
New Sony head unit.

Not loads I know but its a start  things we have planned

Fitting rear seats with seat belts will be the rear bench we got with the Seat trim
Front coilovers
Flip the rear axel so shes closer to the floor
Clear side repeaters and indicators
All red rears
Roof bars
and have to see after that  few piccys

Cheers wayne just pretty limited to what to do to it as its a van but I must admit once the front ends down it will look awsome those pictures dont really do any of the work done justice the back seats were not easy as nothing could be welded due to how thin the metal is in the back.Ill get some better pictures up tomorrow in the light thxs again

looking forward to some better pics.

just gone halves on a caddy with a friend. its a 99 sdi, bit rough and seat front end but cheap enough. currently looking into an alternative way to lowering as the axle flip is a fixed 4" (or lover with blocks once flipped i guess). my mate isnt keen on lowering it but they sit soo high!  have you seen the plated you can get that fit betweent he rear axle and the rear hubs? they allow the hubs to be located higher, thus lowering the back end

well i was hoping to stay away from caddys to be fair, but yours looks sweet with some simple mods.

a lot will be down to price and condition, out of interest, how much is the tax on it ?
Title: Re: Project caddy
Post by: tdi_blu on 21 May 2011, 19:29
I cant remember tbh but I think it was either £118 or £124 for 6 months it dont fall into the lower tax band like newer diesels. The sdi is cheaper to insure than the tdi model though.

Im liking the improvements mate.

Is the rear sitting lower than the front though, can the rear come up a touch seeing as you've had to raise the front already? maybe it'll look more level once you get a deeper splitter on the front.
If it was mine id opt for cleaning the rear doors up a bit, debadging, destickering,  dewipering and colour coding the handle.

Post by: tdi_blu on 22 May 2011, 11:44
It was a lot lower than that tbh but when I was away my dad took it to have the wheel alignment done and he smashed the sump which scared the sh*t out of him  so had the new sump fitted and as my dad uses it raised it but when you see it in the flesh it does look level maybe its the pic or you could be right needs lowering again up front but as I said I have to keep it practical for when my dad uses it.If I was using it daily and just me I would slam it  but cant really as he will get stressed out thinking he is gonna smash the sump again.I was thinking of doing the badges black tbh and the wiper works so maybe a nicer rear arm and blade.Im after the metal bits that fit inside the glass and I will remove the dealer stickers when I get chance thanks again for the comments

looking good, massive improvement actually.

it looks really clean too. i have just started to de rust mine and it looks a total shed now.

keep up the good work.

have you considered a decat? we did ours the other day and there is a certain point in the revs where it sounds amazing!
