Very useful post there from free. Iwould like to add this link which, I think, is very useful and compliments this post very well:-
THE MOT TESTERS MANUAL (http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm)
-
I heard recently that the spare wheel is checked if it is present - BUT, it is not mandatory. Therefore, if it isn't in the car to start with they don't check it and you don't fail

^^^^^^^^^That is correct. If you've got one dodgy tyre, stick the spare on and keep the dodgy tyre at home when you go for the MOT
-
f**k it just get a dodgy MOT
end of the day its who you know
-
also lights which probably doesn apply to most here but must have 1 working fog or reverse light regardless of how many are fitted.
-
You don't need reverse lights/light. We had this debate once before.
-

No, that is incorrect.
The presenter MUST be informed, but you CAN NOT fail a car for a dodgy spare
ref mot manual: Tyres fitted to the road wheels only. The vehicle presenter should be informed when it is noticed that there is a defective tyre on a spare wheel
-
i cant seem to get me reverse lights to work, are you sure it will get through the next mot ok? :undecided:

You should be ok, it's not on this list to check that I found on the net, this is just one of the first sites I came across so have a look at the very first list of examined items -----> http://www.motuk.co.uk/mot_testing.htm

Definate, mine have never worked on the cabrio as I have the wrong switch on the gearbox (replacement gearbox).

sweet!

"Wipers and washers - operate to give the driver a clear view of the road"
I've got my MOT in October and have removed my rear wiper. Will this be a failure? I think it passed without one last year, can't remember!
-
i think if its not fitted they dont check it, if you have one but it doesnt work then that may be a different matter! some base model fords come with no rear wiper, they must get through there mot!
-
You don't need the rear wiper for the MOT. If you have one fitted it doesn't have to work and they can't even snag the wiperblade itself.
-
try this link all; http://www.ukmot.com/manual.asp
It gives you the reasons that the MOT station will fail your car on.
-
 My God, How useful is that link! I should be able to check most of the car over with that, and with a bit of luck be able to predict what she might fail on. Still depends on how strict the tester is and if the garage is one of those that like to fail everything in the hope of making money though, or is that me being cynical?
-
That link is the guidlines that all testers have to follow. If you are unhappy with any reason that he/she has failed your car for then ask him about it and ask to see in the inspection manual where it says the reason for which they failed you.

Hi guys
What about a rear number plate light as I smoothed my boot and shifted me number plate but I don't want big ugly lights all over the number plate any ideas on the legalities not so bad in summer. :D
-

A NICE LITTLE TIP FOR YA - I always say that i don't carry a spare cos its too much hassle to get it out with my boot stuffed full of speakers and amps and stuff  i've only had one tester actually open the boot and he took one look at the sub box and closed it again

The number plate will have to have some kind of illumination otherwise they'll fail that deffo. They fail them if one of the two number plate lights is out if memory serves me correct because I think that happened to me years ago.
-
do you know my grandads mk2 golf has never failed an MOT, C reg 1300cc its imaculate, still all original parts only had about 5 bulbs orginal exhaust i think god its amazing. in mars red ya gotta see it. i want a car garaged since new.

How about black & silver plates? I've had one on the front since may and haven't been pulled for it yet (touch wood, ooh thats nice ), am i going to have greif when i try and get my MOT in February? i don't want to take it off
-
Black and silver plates are ok..................................if your car is registered before 1973 !
Just take them off and put them back on later.

So i will have to take it off, bugger!!! I stuck it over the old one and i think it might break if i try and take it off
RYOUNG - My grandads 12 year old merc (owned from new) has only ever had one fuse and one bulb changed, and there was a problem with the alarm once but they just had to reset it or something  - They don't make em like they used to do they
-
You can always try and get away with it, depends on how well you know the MOT tester I guess. I've got black and silver plates on my camper but its a 1971.

my golf is 1982

Is that the official guide  there's nothing on there about colour at all  does this mean i can leave the plate on and, if i get pulled, tell the copper to poke it up his rr's
-
I'll ask my mate that does my MOT's
-
well thank you

Wow, It looks like its ok to dehandle the doors too...I guess they had to do that because of TVRs.

The only thing that your car can fail for on the spare wheel is if it is not secured correctly. Tread, wear, holes in the walls does not matter as long as the wheel is secure.
-
Dont you have to carry a jack & wheel brace too :nerd:

sorry to be a nerd :nerd: but I checked again with referance to the spare wheel and all I can find is that "any externally fitted spare wheel and/or carrier is securely attached to the vehicle" and can only fail for "An externally fitted spare wheel or carrier insecure to the extent that it islikely to fall off."
As for the jack, no need to have, I can't see anything
-
just a tip on the numberplate lights the palte has to have illumination on it. But it doesn't matter if it does bugger all, my old bmw passed with one of those tail tidy things for bikes as a numberplate light and that didn't light the plate at all.

I have a small crack in the plastic of my front indicator. Is this going to be a problem come MOT time?
-
I have a small crack in the plastic of my front indicator. Is this going to be a problem come MOT time?
You may be ok as long as it doesn't show any white light through it, but I'd still replace it anyway.
-
:smiley:Speaking as an MOT tester:.... spare wheel is only checked for the cage security if its slung underneath.
Reg lamp must be fitted, if theres 2,3 or 4 they must all work
Number plates as long as there fitted it doesnt matter what colour they are for the MOT.. different matter for the police though as its one of their regulations..
Cracks and other damage to indicators/red lenses are ok so long as no white light is seen
High level brake lamp if fitted and does not work is not a reason for failure, we as testers have to presume its not wired so the benefit of the doubt goes to the presenter
Rear wipers are not tested
Reverse lights not tested
Hope this helps
Phil

Thanks Phil...
-
Same thing on my mk1 tin top. reverse lights dont work. I spent ages trying to get them to work, same thing with the switch on what must be a replacement gearbox. I was going to wire in a dash board switch for the and when I checked with a mechanic whether it was acceptable, he said dont bother as it will pass with out them. He was right, its been through to mots now and passed with them not working. Still cant see where I am going in reverse at night though! Mind you, as you know, in a mk1 with stock headlights its much the same when going forward.

hi guys,
recently got a mk3 gti which has 5 stud wheel pattern. I took the wheels of to give them a clean the other day and noticed one of the front wheels has only 4 bolts securing it. at some point a previous owner has sheared one of the bolts and it is stuck in the hub - along with brake retaining screw sheared off - would this fail an MOT as wheel is possibly not fully secure?
looks like new hub if so 'cos have tried to remove sheared bolt with easy-outs and no movement.
cheers Andy

pretty sure this is a failure. Heat it up with a gas torch then try easy outs.
-
hi, thanks for reply, wouldnt heating it up cause the metal to expand? it is made all the more complicated a the bolt that has sheared has so at an angle and not flush so trying to drill a pilot hole for the easy out is a right pain in the @rse.
-
When you heat it up it will expand. The idea is that it breaks any point where the stud and the hub have rusted together as they should expand at different rates.
-
thanks this will come in hand diamond geeza

Hi all,
I posted a topic on the Mk3 forum and thought I would see if anyone looking at this section can help, it's titled "Before I murder the salesguy" and basically boils down to this......
Bought a MK3 8v GTi for the missus a couple of weeks ago
Garage I bought it from put 12 months MOT on it
Came home from working away for a while to drive it after the missus complained of a knocking noise
Found that the front suspension strut mounts are badly worn to the extent that both front strut's move up and down when the car is jacked up by over an inch.
The front end of the car feels really vague when driving
Is this an MOT failure? Do I have any comeback on the garage to get this sorted??
Cheers
-
REF REVERSING LIGHTS
IF THEY ARE ON THE VEHICAL THEY HAVE TO WORK FOR AN MOT
SO IF YOU COVER OR BLANK OUT THE LENS IT WILL BE OK

it depend upon how much movement the strut tops have as the tester will check with the car raised and on the floor so iff the movement was not present on the floor and the tester did not think that the play in the mounts were excessive then it may be tricky as it is down to the testers discresion i know this as i am a tester lol - they say on the course if in doubt pass and advise did u get an advisory notice with the mot????

REF REVERSING LIGHTS
IF THEY ARE ON THE VEHICAL THEY HAVE TO WORK FOR AN MOT
SO IF YOU COVER OR BLANK OUT THE LENS IT WILL BE OK
also on the mot the reverse light do not have to work as they are not part of the test the mot tester will not check them so it does not matter im really up todate on this as i done my mot testers course in febuary so to clear it up reverse lights do not matter
-
i have just put a vr6 lump out of a k reg vento in to my mk2 g plate how does the mot work with emmissions?? does it still need
to have cat fitted? and are there any other issues that i need to do before u take her in
-
As I recall, K reg didn't need a compulosry cat I don't think, but do a google search to confirm. I'd have thought they'd go on the year of the car anyway rather than the year of the engine.
-
the donor car for my conversion had a cat on, just that everyone i talk to about this they all say something different like they go by the engine code to determine cat or not. because its a g plate motor you dont need to worry and so on. just want to get my head round it b4 she goes in for her mot

what about CV boots need to be able to work on lock to lock and be secure with no rips in them , also no stickers can get in the way on the windscreen in the certain place of the veiw area , certain number plate font can fail ,
-
Looks very useful cheers :D

what about CV boots need to be able to work on lock to lock and be secure with no rips in them , also no stickers can get in the way on the windscreen in the certain place of the veiw area , certain number plate font can fail ,
only outer cv joints have to have no splits in
+ mot tester broke my satnav holder that was stuck on the windscreen so take anything off yourself to save hastle caused by retards
-
Should be good when its done going to do some good deals with mot you get half price service. We should be able to get all skyline through mot easy and very fast as mot parts here on the shelf.
-
i heard that if your bonnet doesnt shut properly then it will fail an mot, is this true?
my bonnet shuts properly only when i puss the lever back into its rest position
-
give it time and we wil all be like those euros..... hi vis....spare bulbs...first aid...load of tosh brussels b@llshi7
-
does it matter if your boot doesnt open?

Rear brakes chirp when releasing. Fail on mot? Left side of dash does not light up(speedometer)reason a mystery. Fail on mot? Front left tyre has worn outer tread only. Middle and inner tread ok. Fail mot? left rear tailight has small 1mm crack with small chip missing for turn signal. ( I mean less than 2 mm) Otherwise car is ok.
Lots of little crap. I use the rpm guage to determine speed at night. Or turn on cabin light.
Lots of little crapola that really don't affect driving.
-
the reverse lights are not needed for mot. and spare wheels are not checked either. i no thi cos i am an mot tester my self. car will fail mot tho if it has a space saver fitted. got to have the same size wheel and tyre on the same axle.
-
Rear wiper snapped off. Friend sId don't worry not part of mot test. Is this true?
-

yes true no rear wiper or washer not working is NOT a failure

brakes go on efficiancy test and when you mean chirp when releasing ? do you mean binding on ?
tyres have to have no cords showing and minimum of 1.6mm 3/4 from the centre of the tyre.
dash lights are not failure.
rear lights can fail if a sharp edge is showing or white light from the bulb illuminating is showing
-
Can anyone shed light on this for me.
Car has been off the road for a year. All seems to be well with regards to the check list, drives ok, good breaking etc so is road worthy in my eyes.
I have insurance but no tax or MOT.
I know you are allowed to drive to the MOT station if a test booked.
Is there a limit on this distance. I was hoping to go to my mates 50 miles away. Is this pushing my luck?
Cheers
scott
-
if there are LOTS of MOT places closer then YES you will be pushing your luck
-
no there is no regulation legally how far/near you have to go for a mot..as long as you are driving STRAIGHT there.. I drove from central london to Guildford...over 30 miles away..
Just make sure you have it booked at the place with your licence plate..as your friendly policeman may ask you if stopped...but more importantly if a camera catches you, you will have a reason for driving it!!
-
f**k it just get a dodgy MOT
end of the day its who you know
salooo get a plastic 1 ... i do passes every year
-
number plates
6.3 registration plates
method of inspection:
2 On vehicles first registered on or after 1 january 1973, check:
colour of the characters and background
that the registration plates are fixed as close to vertical as is reasonably practical
3 on vehicles first registered on or after 1 september 2001, check that the registration plates do not display a honeycomb or similar effect background
Reason for rejection:
2a a front registration plate does not have black characters on a white background
b a rear registration plate does not have black characters on a yellow background
3 a registration plate obviously displaying a honeycomb or similar background (note this includes background overprinted or shadowed with text eg, vehicle manufacturer name,)
taken from VTS MOT inspection manual
so a bored traffic officer playing car snooker would have reason to pull you over and give you a ticket especially if you got a nice black gti with black plates, (7 points for a black one lol)
