I mentioned the lack of any rattle from the chains to the technician who is doing the work - and he quite correctly stated that the the 20v engine has variable valve timing - when an engine has VVT if a timing issue is present it will constantly try to increase tension to alieviate the problem.  Thus on the old Vr6 engines when a chain was about to go it would rattle and chain slap - but with the VVT engines the lack of tension is compensated for by the ecu - so there is a greater chance of it going pop without any prior tell tale signs.

Long and short if there is a fault code it's there for a reason and means that the engine is operating outside of the preset parameters in the ECU - it is perfectly capable of operting outside of the parameters and will compensate but for how long is the question....

Does the v5 and v6 have variable valve timing?
On the 20v it only works at idle, to reduce emissions, or so i was told by another very knowledgable chap on here.
