are we considered 'c0cks' like audi drivers (my favourite being the a3 2.0 drivers - complete (unts in a sh1t car)?
are we considered morons like micra drivers (i hate every single one)?
are we considered oxygen thieves like bmw 320d drivers (get out of my way you bell end with a slow car)?!
my brother in law has always said that GTI drivers are aggresive and that driving one 'unleashes a beast within'. its a fair point
-
I think Clarkson once described the MkV GTi as the car to buy if you have a medical need to get to 60 in 7 seconds.
I agree though, I do drive very aggresively, although at the same time conisder msyelf as quite a courteous driver, always happy to let people out of junctions etc. But I don't suffer fools gladly on the road (even though I am probably one myself!)
-
Hmmmm if the GTI is meant to look discreet, I am not sure the outside would notice GTI owners over any other Golf owners unless you the owner drives the GTI like a c0ck on heat!
-
I have a valid question:
Do you care?
I don't. I couldn't give a toss how other people view the car I drive...because I bought it for me, not to impress others.

nope, i couldn't give two fooks. but i thought it might make a semi interesting thread, and a welcome aside from listening to you describe the gti as a shopping car

Do you care?
Yes, I care that most people see a 5-dr silver Golf first and a GTi second. I wanted a more discreet hot hatch that would do everything.
But that's just me - ETTO

Controversial!
A Golf first? Not a GTI first?
People have been hung for less...

The GTI is a shopping car, it's also a performance car, it's also a car with a very good image , it's also a good family car which you can put a roofrack on and a fridge in the back if you want to. That's why we love them, they can do everything.
All things to all men (and women).
-
They think ' Flash git, bet he lives in Hertfordshire'

Well put...I would vote for that.

Ok, rephrase. I meant others perception, not my interpretation.
Personally I like the restrained styling (relative to other hot hatches) of VW.

+1. Summed up perfectly

agree with S3 in regards to, that I am buying the car for myself and not caring how other people view it, well at least hoping they are thinking ....“Hmm that’s a nice looking car!â€
But it does raise a couple of interesting points.
If you are, or about to become a GTI owner, you do check out everyone you see, irrespective of what mark it is.
There's a white mkV, white, private reg, driven by a young female, which is absolutely stunning, (the car that is) just round the corner from me, and I always have a look at it when I drive by. (again the car)
If someone is aggressively driving I tend to ignore what car they are in, but rather try to get a look at the driver.
A tw*t is still a tw*t, no matter what car they are driving.
The best bit of advice I have been given is to always stay well back from the shell suit and Burberry cap types, plus the blazer and flat cap octogenarian brigade.
-
I've tried to start a friendly GTi and .:R32 waving club around Glasgow, but people tend to think you've escaped the ward for the day!
-

good point! i also appreciate a good driver - there is a girl who drives a red fiesta st on my way to work, every couple of months our paths cross and we have a little "race" (if i'm in the mood) - she is very very aggresive but is a very good driver. she even beat me once
-
I get the same and mostly get dirty looks from other GTi drivers which is a shame but hey ho I'm sad and having fun!
-
she even beat me once
...and that's been your fantasy ever since, eh?
-

i would wave at you if i saw you - but since we've worked out we're in the same area i haven't seen you once!!
-
VW Golf is the commonest car in Europe.
Many have owned one, most of those (in their hearts) would have liked to own the gti version.
I find people just have a mild respect for GTI drivers, no bad thing.
We get let out at junctions, no one really bothers racing you, they don't get scratched too often, but they have the road presence to allow for rapid and smooth progress.

That's because I'm so minted I get the police to close the roads when I feel like going for a drive
-
Thanks for that FamilyDub

no one really bothers racing you
i find the complete opposite, i would say on average for every 2 days of driving i get at least one mug who wants a race. honestly, its that bad. or maybe i'm just looking for it i don't know?!

That's about what I am experiencing here in France. I just completely ignore them, as if I were driving a Veyron...

I was wondering since the GTI can be construed as a sports car, do you folks think putting on racing stripes would make it really nice like the Mini or like Mustangs?
Views please?
If there are stripes on your GTI, I am sure it will turn some heads?

I think every ones opinion will differ.. Caught a middle aged man and his dad staring into my car last weekend at B&Q. As i gave them the obligitory flash of the indicators (i.e. stand the feck back) i realised they were just admiring, and the gent was showing his dad that he wanted to get one. that put a little smile on my face!
Other times you can tell that others in sporty hatchs will try their absolute best to not make eye contact :undecided:.
You cant please everyone.. so just please yourself!! (not like that you dirty barstewards  )
-
Well obviously the world considers GTI drivers to be persons of good taste and restraint :smug: - that's if they notice you in the first place...
Racing stripes only work on a 1960's automotive legend or an actual racing car.

No no no definitely no stripes.

For me, I think the world views GTI drivers as boy racers. Esp with the old mk's. I think the GTI grew up when the mk5 and now 6 appeared but I think some people will still have that impression of us.
Doesnt bother me, I cant wait to plank my ass in mine.

Kev
I think maybe 'man(woman) racers' or 'getting older and still having fun' racers or even 'grown up racers'.
The GTI isn't and has never been a boy racer car. Even the Mk1s were a practical hot hatch with style.
(Focus RS, Pg GTI, Saxo thingy,Cosworth, Mini JCW on the other hand...)
-
Leave the stripes for Ford.

Thot it would be nice to have stripes... just to be different... but I guess you are right... perhaps the GTI is too elegant to be too showy...

I agree mate, but the people ive talked to have immediately said.. 'oh still a boy racer at heart eh Kev' when I mentioned Ive bought a GTi.

Views?
As long as I have a hole in my ass, the GTI will not be a Sportscar.
It's a FWD hatchback...not a Sportscar. But we've been down that road already...so... :lipsrsealed:
-
Same here, or else "having another mid-life crisis?"
-
Imo too many after market (cosmetic) mods does not suit the styling and image of the Gti...I think that the 6 has a nice grown up feel to it but yet still remains sporty! Not a bad thing I'd say....
-
I Think the world views us GTI drivers as overpaid cocks! I must admit when i was driving my Audi A3 and a nice brand new GTI appears in my rear view mirror and no matter how hard i pushed i could not get away! I thought the same! now the shoe is on the other foot! "Get back in the peasant lane where you belong!!"
-

Another?! How many times you been through mid-life, Fro?

Bloke came past me in an blue RS6 saloon - now he's overpaid... £23,000 is quite middle-of-the-road these days for a new car.
-

and a c0ck as he's in an audi!!

How so?
You can pick up an RS6 for significantly less than the price of a new GTI....so how does that make him overpaid? (Unless it was a new one...but still doesn't make him overpaid!)
-
It was a shiny new 59 plate job with the ur-quattro style wide arches, 580bhp V10 and a list price of £74,555. I'm sure he worked hard for it though!

My dear S3, I was not asking views on whether the GTI is a sports car or not. I was asking for views whether racing stripes would look good on the GTI or not. So please dont put words in my mouth. Thanks

You didn't specify that!
And as for the stripes, they'll look sh!t.
Best not bother my dear HM.

Who, me?

i have to admit that 18inch monzas and xenon do make the gti look much more "flash" than a regular golf. i still like it, but it aint that discreet.
therefore i can understand why some might think it a "flash" car

I think Clarkson once described the MkV GTi as the car to buy if you have a medical need to get to 60 in 7 seconds.
Take 8 sachets of FyboGel in one go, and I think you'd qualify! :embarassed: :embarassed:

But you could get Xenons on a Fiat Punto - and you can't polish a turd! (The turd being the Punto, not the GTI)

I have always thought VW GTI buyers are a sensible lot tbh.
Unlike Impreza owners
