I guess they don't feel the same affinity to the GTi brand as (for example) Mini owners or Beetle owners do.
Many people just get the GTi as an upmarket family car with no real enthusiasm for the GTi marque and it's history.

 I suppose I should keep a low profile for a while...

And me! In five months only one guy in a red GTI has ever waved at me!

....It was probably me!

....I wave at Mk1 and Mk2 GTI's and Mk4 and 5 R32's as well as Mk5 GTI's. It's just a way of sharing one's enthusiasm for such cars: "Aren't our cars great? I've got one too". It may have started as a tradition for old school cars but there's no justifiable reason why it can't be applied elsewhere. Anyway, the GTI is an iconic car.

Well good to see its not just me anyway!!

But I agree with RR above, why not a nod of a wave to other GTI owners, I am going to continue until I get arrested as a lunatic

I saw a nice black gti at tesco's in Midsomer Norton this afternoon, I gave him a nod, couldn't see if he responded as it was lashing down and my wipers were only on intermittant.
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

A smile and a wave, if even just the raising of a finger, can do no harm and only spread a little joy.

It always feels better to see a  than a

well for what it's worth i normally give a nod or a quick flash to other GTI drivers , why ? well i hope that they are as proud of their cars as i am of mine and happy to be part of the GTI family. Maybe im getting sentimental in my old age, but i feel good in the car and proud of it.so i will carry on doing it i guess.
Gone but not fogotton Diamond Black GTI ( MKiv)
