head unit change to nav model
« on: 04 July 2019, 22:19 »
Hello folks,

just bought a 2014 Golf GTD and I did not manage to get a model with a head unit.
now I have found one on eBay here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-17-VW-GOLF-MK7-GTD-RADIO-STEREO-HEAD-UNIT-SCREEN-DISPLAY-3G0919605D/264342900381?hash=item3d8c108e9d:g:QdcAAOSwyTNc77Z4

now will this just plug straight in and nothing else to wire up for the sat nav and it should start working and all the other features will work too?

thanks

Definitely not. You have Discover Media MIB most probably Gen2 which is 16.5cm [6.5"].
The ebay link is for the screen only, you need the unit as well.
Besides, it has component's protection, so it needs to be removed and coded by someone who knows what they are doing (like VW Retrofit in Redditch).
Not as simple as it may seem, but perfectly doable.

Work about £100. And the cost for hardware depends on which head unit you will get.
Make sure you get Apple Connect/Android Auto, so that you can use Waze on your screen...

Every Mk7 GTD has a head unit.

The car itself uses the display for various configuration items.

Show us a photo of what you have in the car... the thing above the gearstick.

Yes, the picture would be the safest way.
I assume it is Discover Media Gen2 6.5"

And let me add that MIB2 6.5” and 8” screens are interchangeable, so you only change the screens as both 6,5" and 8" use 800x480 resolution.
However, if you want to have 9.2" screen, you have to change the head unit, as it uses 1280x680 resolution.
But post the picture and we will be able to help you.
