as for the shift rod weight... I might try and look at A1 scrappy up the road... are they easy to take out?
Not a problem, makes a change to be helpful as mk1's are few and far between on here.
Yes, really easy to remove but I'm unsure if all models have them, I think they changed to something intergrated and more heavy duty on later models or 16v GTIs with O2A boxes?

Just look in the nearside of a mk3's engine bay, quite low and close to the bulkhead for the part pictured above, it's only held in by two split pins.
