Title: New Windscreen
Post by: clarky92 on 23 May 2018, 13:02
Due to have a new windscreen fitted Friday by National Windscreens to my 7.5 GTI PP

The screen has been ordered direct from VW so not a cheap knock off

Having never had a new windscreen before, any tips or things I should be doing?

I'm guessing obvious things like walking round the car with the guy before hand and noting any damage, signing a damage report and photographing the damage report?

Should I stay outside and chat with the guy whilst he fits it so ensure no damage to the car is attempted to be hidden?

I've read about replacement of a gel pack for the sensors?

Had my screen repaired by Autoglass at the weekend. Autoglass do carry out a damage inspection before they carry out any work, but whether that’s the norm now, I don’t know. I had the screen on my mk6 Golf repaired by National Windscreens and they didn’t carry out a damage inspection, although that was three years ago, so they may carry out an inspection now.

When I had mine done the guy came out took one look at it and said, I can’t do that, it needs to be done in our depot, as the sensors need recalibrating,
Took it to their depot and they went round the car filling out a damage report, and another when done

Thats interesting, will have to see what he says. I will be testing all functions before he is aloud to leave after the job

I had that with our Audi A4 ((2016)

It’s a complete ball ache and was a large chunk out of my day.  Autoglass depot in Bedford is not set up for customers to wait for 2hrs or so.

Do the 7.5's have a camera in the windscreen?  My Audi does, but as far as I can see its just a standard rain / light sensor on the golf.  I'm also getting a new windscreen on Friday.

Not if you have traffic sign assist 😉 there’s a camera and a rain/light sensor (only 2, not the 4 like in the mk7)

National Windscreens did mine and I was with him all the time chatting. The Gel doesn't need replacing unless he damages it through being careless. It should be a straight forward job to a competent tech. Just make sure they do not damage the A pillar trim as some of them use a wire they wind around the screen and they have damaged a few trims. The guy I had used the old school hand tool to cut the sealer around the edge.

Mine changed today by Autoglass, less than an hour and perfect job.  Glass is the identical, even made by pilkington per the original except it doesn't have a vw logo.

Glass is only made by Pilkington and St Gobain as far as I know and then VW just stamp it.
