New GTI glory shortlived ? R32 on it's way !

     Had an interesting phonecall from VW UK today, following up my test drive on the new GTI and the usual "can we keep in touch" nonsense. I asked about the diesel variant of the GTI which they had no confirmed or estimated release date.. but then piped up with the release of the next generation R32 !

     This should put an end to the speculations of the next "R" being a 3.4 or 3.6 litre 4WD (rumours have been flying around since the mk5 launch about the R34 or R36) so it seems they're sticking with the same 3.2 V6 as fitted to the current R32, and top spec 3.2 Audis.

     Can't wait to see it, but we'll have to wait until spring next year, May 2006 is what I was told, plenty of time to start saving then    You'll know more when I know more !

like the sound of it but i think i'd like to see them get the best out of the gti first. they've got it right so they should just enjoy that for a while before trying to better it again.

With the R32, sounds sweet, but it would help the gti better if it was a limited run.  but then again, i reckon the gti will win many hearts

sorry, VW are nuts.

they had a chance of defining the GTI again, but when it has a more powerful stable mate - whats the point of the GTI? they'll spoil the top of the range with a fat spoilered V engine derived car - that will be instantly compared to the GTI.

i was almost considering a Mk5 GTI in a couple of years again. not now.

why don't they just sell the Mk5 to BMW, rename it the 2 series and be done with it. They are desperate to be BMW so what difference does it make?
