Depends on your engine spec - if you have an early mk 4 with 1.4, 1.6 or 1.8/1.8T engine it will have a conventional throttle cable arrangement. It is difficult (expensive!) to retro fit cruise control to a Golf with conventional throttle.

Most TDI's and later 1.8T (mid 2000 on) models have drive by wire throttle ('dbw') and this can be upgraded to incorporate cruise control at a parts cost of only around ?60. The parts required are a new indicator stalk switch and wiring loom, and the ECU must be activated by a dealer or VAGCOM.

I can't comment on a V5/V6 engine throttle but I think that these may all have dbw so can be easily upgraded.

Like all these upgrades ie adding power steering or air con, it will cost loads of cash getting all the bits and loads of labour.

Just followed that link - great site, very well written and photographed how-to.

Very cheap as well, now I'm considering cruise as well. Only thing that bothers me is f*cking with the steering wheel, due to two fears:

1) don't fancy setting the airbag off
2) what happens if I can't get the b*stard back together!?

Car goes in for its 40K mile service at Vindis in two weeks, so I'll ask them what they'll charge to fit it all.

Just goes to show you what a rip off options are at the time of purchase eh? That's prob a ?300 option at the time of build, and we can can buy the parts retail for under ?60!!!

The greatest leveller of them all - the Carousel

Warranty should be OK if the dealer fits it for you (there is an official VW instruction document detailing the fitting procedure for the retro fit cruise control).

If you fit it yourself following foxy's instructions and activate the ECU using VAGCOM on a laptop -  The dealer is unlikely to ever know that the cruise wasn't fitted from new or by another dealer, as you will only have fitted genuine parts!

I've now completed this mod to my 1.8T, and I can confirm that it is possible for a petrol model so long as you have drive-by-wire throttle (post mid 2000 1.8T). Unlike the diesel models you have to fit an extra bit of wiring in the engine bay which is not available from VW.

However I am in the process of making up some more looms for anyone else who wants to complete this mod - Please email me if you would like any more information.

Cheers

Chris
